Golden Age of Canadian LCN

Post by Dave65827 »

Got a question for the Canadian experts. The golden age for American LCN is usually referred to as 60s-90s but I’ve never heard about It for Canadian LCN in general. I’m not necessarily in expert on Canada but I’ve seen two sides through articles I’ve read up on in my spare time

1. The golden age of Canadian LCN occurred concurrently with the Golden age of American LCN

2. The golden age of Canadian LCN happened during the decline of the NY families in the early 90s and lasted till Rizzuto died and all that there

I’m specifically asking about Cosa Nostra too not the relatively new 7-9 Ndrangheta groups in Toronto

Would appreciate any additional info with this I’m very interested about the scene up in Canada

Mmm...more like the 1930s through the 1970s, with a peak in the 1950s.
All roads lead to New York.

The Galante-Cotroni period under the control of the Bonanno Crime Family is huge, equivalent to that of Nicolo & Vito Rizzuto, so like Lupara, I would say 1953-2004. Afterwards for me, despite their efforts, they are only a shadow of themselves.

The Papalia Family was pretty serious since 1910.

Must divide the Rizzuto family from the ndrangheta families.
The Rizzutos golden age started in the 1970s when Nick Rizzuto sr become de facto independent from the Bonnanos and lasted until the Vito extradiction.
The Siderno gruop was powerful in the 1950s and become more powerful in the 1990s when the ndrangheta replaced cosa nostra as key player in the drug trade.

In the 70s Nicolo was mainly in Venezuela with the Cuntrera brothers. He went there in 1972 or 1973 with Vito and Paolo Renda. He only returned in Montreal after the murder of Violi.

And although Montreal has always been quite independent with its own hierarchy, they have always been under the thumb of the Bonannos. At least until 2004, although some authors or journalists believe they stopped sending envellopes after the Sciascia murders in 1999

I think he came back shortly around 1980 but was mostly in Venezuela at the time.

Could say 1950s-1970s with the French Connection. Then you could say 1980-2000 when the Rizzutos brought the Montreal Mafia to new heights.
