Scarpa, Gravano and family transfer

Post by Ed »

Mob investigator Angela Clemente has posted more FBI files about her investigation into Greg Scarpa.

In one report, Scarpa told agents in July 1973 that “REDACTED has been transferred to the GAMBINO crew”. (I can’t seem to copy the report)

I’m pretty sure Sammy Gravano transferred out of the Colombo Crime Family at this time.

It’s interesting to think the FBI was probably aware of Gravano’s transfer as soon as it happened.

I could be wrong but I believe Gravano transfered out a little later. If my memory is correct it was around the time Shorty Spero was made into the Colombos (January/Febraury 1976).

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Could be him, but Pogo could also be right.

What gets me is how quickly he was made for being so new to the family. It was Bensonhurst though where the Colombos/Gambinos were intertwined so not that much of a reach, but you still have to figure he got the spot over some longtime Gambino associates.

My dates could be off so maybe it's not him. I quickly reread "Underboss" again on this point and Gravano seems to be pretty vague about the timeline. Sometime in the first half of the 70s but my take was about 1973 because I know Gravano did spend sometime building up his rep within the Gambino Crime Family before he got made.

If it isn't Gravano, who else could it be?

Alex,

very good points. I guess there was more than one transfer between the two families at that time. That the name is redacted is curious though...generally, in my experience, for a fairly innocent piece of Intel, the FBI wouldn't redact the name unless he was alive still. thanks for all the comments guys.

There is nothing to elaborate, after the 2nd colombo war the colombo familly relased some soldiers to the other famillies.Just like after the first colombo war.Wich was a shame for them because a lot of the former colombos went to be big in the other famillies,if you get what I mean.

Apologies, my sattelite connection here fucking up again. I meant to say, totally "get what you mean" man. Gravano and Boriello wound up w/the Gambinos, and Pappa with the Genovese IIRC. Just trying to find out if there were more from that period who transferred. I don't preuse FBI files and American LCN history as much as many others on this board do. :)

Another Colombo associate who transferred was Sonny Indelicato, who got made with the Bonannos and was a major player almost right away. Not sure when he transferred, though. His trajectory is interesting because he had a number of relatives who were big players in the Gambino family going back decades, but he was never with them to my knowledge.
