Before they were boss

Post by B. »

This is a topic for asking about the background of guys who later became famous for being bosses, top guys, etc. I'll start with one...

Frank Costello. He was in some kind of leadership position by 1931 but it's not clear if he was consigliere or captain. Any idea if he was a captain under Masseria? Are there any known crews/soldiers who can be traced back to Costello? Seems like he gets lumped into some mythical crew with young Luciano and Genovese, but I don't know if there is anything to back that up.

According to Bill Bonanno (by way of his father no doubt) Costello was the Consiglieri in 1931.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Ah, thanks. Now I'm just wondering what led him there. When it comes to the history of guys like him, it seems like they get lumped into the same crew as their business associates, but we know that often means little as far as which crew they were with.
