Does mobsters use their family's name or the names made up by Media/FBI to separate families by territory?

Yes. John Gotti was on tape saying something along the lines of “The Gambino family? This should be called the Shargel & Cutler family,” for instance. I would imagine when talking about members in other families they’d say something like, “that’s so & so, he’s with the Gambino’s.”
