Do made guys pull weight in today’s federal or state prisons?

Post by HoagieNose »

Just wondering how much respect being a made guy pulls in today’s prison system? I would assume it’s not the same as it was 30-40 years ago, but does anyone have any insight into that?

You hear anecdotal stuff from all over the place. Gotti getting attacked by Walter Johnson (a legit lunatic). Joey Merlino paid some Mexican gang bangers to watch his back while he was doing time in Texas. Persico getting a drink thrown in his face over dispute about a cafeteria table. Other inmates idolizing Italian mob guys. The Italians getting in that dust up with the Albanians up in Danbury. And so on. But these don't really cover the overall picture of all the mob guys doing time. It seems like they do their time like anyone else for the most part (no Goodfellas dinner scenes). They don't run the prison but they aren't sitting ducks either. I imagine where said mafioso is doing their time plays a large part in it.

On a side note, you don't have to go quite so far back to find examples of this kind of stuff...

John Kiriakou, the CIA whistleblower, said they were “by far the smallest group, but by far the most respected” or something similar to it (I’m paraphrasing). He did like 2 years less than a decade ago so it is fairly recent stuff.

There are a lot of ex-con YouTubers who run "prison channels" and talk about their experience in the fed system, or the state system from wherever they are from (with California having the most structured, serious "prison culture" out of anywhere)

It's different everywhere, from what I understand some fed prisons people group up by their location first, then their race - and other times it's vise versa. Some of the west coast fed USPs follow California's state "rules" where it's purely race based. Some facilities may have a "wiseguy car" or an "OC car" where it's italians and ancillary associates who hang together.

For the most part it seems LCN guys, especially guys who are going to see the light of day at some point, mostly try to do good, clean, easy time - and stay out of the 'politics'

I know Carmine Persico was at Lompoc. I wonder how involved he was with stuff there, because that's a place that basically mirrors Cali's state system where each race is it's own gang and the top guy from each race is usually a "made member" of one of Cali's big 4 prison gangs. I'd imagine a guy like Persico would just be left alone and allowed to do / enjoy his time the way he wants, but some of the prisons have crazy self imposed rules that no matter who you are, you follow or get punished...LCN member or not

In the east coast the mobsters still have power but in the other places they must pay for protection.
Nicky Scarfo sr paid the mexican mafia in terre haute and was in the 1980s but lil nicky was nobody in Texas.
The LCN is still respected so a wiseguy can easly done his time if dont go against who really rule the prison.

I would think the glamour of the mafia would make most prisoners be cool towards them. The black guys especially worship the mafia. My guess is state prison is a different story for mob guys doing time.

I think people tend to over think this. It seems in prison guys who are tough, respectful and capable of standing up for themselves generally do fine in prison. Most mob guys fit into that category, so they do fine. They just choose to avoid prison politics and do easy time.

Despite what what John Alite or Gene Borello may say, the vast majority of made guys will not hesitate to get into a fight and would never back down from a fight or allow themselves to be disrespected, same as any gang banger would that they may be locked up with.

The mob is mostly unrecognized in California. Italians out here are just considered regular whites. La EME controls the prisons out west, and the streets in SoCal, including the cartels active in So Cal. Crips or Bloods still control a lot of the predominately black areas in So Cal. The rest of the state is a mish mash between Asians, bikers, black gangs, and in the heavily Latino areas, like Monterrey Co., San Jose, and the central valley, the Nuestra Familia (Nortenos) are still on top. Italian mobsters out here may work in conjunction with the aforementioned but they don't give orders or collect taxes.
Glick told author Nicholas Pileggi that he expected to meet a banker-type individual, but instead, he found Alvin Baron to be a gruff, tough-talking cigar-chomping Teamster who greeted him with, “What the fuck do you want?”

You could probably count the number of made guys in California on two hands.
