In the 1970s Danny Leo was a huge narcotics trafficker. NYPD detective described him as a 'heroin bulk reseller'. He was an associate of Genovese soldier Carmine Seglimbene, a.k.a. Johnny Lamps, who was ID'd by the FBI as a 'multi-kilo heroin dealer' himself. Frank Viserto Jr., the guy Scott mentioned on the first page of this topic, was a member of the Purple Gang. He was even named by the OCTF as the gang's head, and a 'heavy dealer in narcotics and guns'. He was Johnny Lamps' son-in-law, and he likely established early connections for himself and Leo with the Genovese family through his father-in-law.

I bet I know where you got that quote from- I used it recently :D :D

Johnny Lamps was convicted of narcotics charges in the early 1970s and sentenced to ten years in prison. Characterized by the FBI as a “multi kilo heroin dealer”, Saglimbene was associated with a number of Pleasant Avenue mobsters, including Johnny “Echoes” Campopiano.

Frank Viserto's father, Frank Sr was also a Genovese associate. The Visertos were from East Harlem.

Any info what crew Seglimbene was under?

I also wonder what role Angelo Prisco had in the Purple Gang. Seems that Leo continued financial success his whole criminal career, but was Prisco always/ever an earner?

One of the Genovese family's Manhattan crews. Seglimbene was active in Manhattan and The Bronx. Later in life he moved to Fort Lee, NJ.

Viserto Sr. was even a suspected member by the NYPD. That was before the botched assassination at the clam bar in Smithtown in August 77.

He and his brother Pasquale were definitely considered members of the Gang in the 1970s. Of course, they are cousins to Michael and Joseph Meldish, so those familial connections were important. If you look at Purple Gang connections- family ties are pretty common (e.g. Ray Resicldo is a brother-in-law of Angelo Caiano, who is a cousin of Paul Caiano, who are both nephews of Carmine Caiano) . In terms of his activities, a few things of note relating to lower-level stuff - he was a 'strong-arm man' for Joe Pagano in Rockland County a few times in the early 70s when the Genovese family were looking to muscle into the carting industry there. He is called a 'strong-arm man' for heroin supplier Thomas D'Ambrosio in the early 1980s.

I find it interesting in this indictment how he has petrozza answering to him (through palumbo i imagine). How many crews has Palumbo been associated with and where did he come from? I don't buy the whole boss of jersey concept, to me anyways hes just an acting captain who acts as a messenger too. Its hard to figure out who's with who in the westside, but it seems at one point Leo (through Palumbo or Salzano) were involved in at least 3 guys tied to really big sportsbooks. Petrozza if i remember correctly was indicted with Ninny, the Tassiellos had their own book, i believe that Salzano was shaking down the Pisacano bros as well. The whole Palumbo/Leo/Prisco/Bruschi connection is interesting to say the least.

Didnt they at one time run all these bar tending schools, unions and ownership in bar(s) through loansharking debt?
