Hi all
I was going through the Vito DeFilippo files again and something caught my eye. There's this part where it walks about a redacted member being made by JB during the Bonanno war. It's close proximity to an informant talking about Vito's recent promotion to capo, makes it highly likely that they are talking about Patrick.
Has anyone else run into this? Obviously the books were closed for NY during the 60s, but JB was accused of making men in Canada I believe. If true, I wonder if Galante formally recognized him when the DeFilippo's were brought back into the NY family.

Re: Patrick DeFilippo inducted in the 60s?
Good eye -- I'm sure it's referring to him. This is the first time I've seen it explicitly said Pat DeFilippo was made during the 1960s, but it's been my belief for years.
I spoke to JD about it when he was still around and he said DeFilippo is confirmed as a made member by 1976. He suspected DeFilippo was part of the first wave of Bonanno inductions but the last time we spoke about it he hadn't found direct evidence confirming a date of induction, only that DeFilippo appears to have returned to NYC from Las Vegas and fallen right in with the membership.
- The FBI had him as a "suspected" member in the 1960s.
- During the Bonanno conflict, Joe Bonanno was accused of inducting members in Canada and the West Coast when the books were closed. This is referenced by more than one source though none of the alleged inductees are named.
- On the Magaddino tapes, he talks to Bonanno figures about Joe Notaro traveling to Canada in the early 1960s where he inducted members. This upset Magaddino as the Bonanno Canada crew was supposed to have a limited number of members and these inductions exceeded it (there appears to have been ongoing confusion about this within the Bonanno family, too, as Vitale went to Montreal expecting 10 members and found 19). We can assume it also violated Commission rules on inductions.
- Given the DeFilippos' ties to Canada and the West Coast, I suspect Pat DeFilippo was one of the members made in Canada or the West Coast without Commission approval. We have no way of knowing if the members inducted in those locations were permanent residents there or if they used those inductions as opportunities to bring in members who lived elsewhere.
- I suspect Peter Notaro was also one of the members inducted during the 1960s. I saw info suggesting he was not yet made when the books were closed and if his cousin Joe performed the Canada induction, it's possible Peter was included. Maybe someone has info Notaro was already made in the 1950s, not sure. Also curious about Simari's induction.
If it's true DeFilippo was inducted against Commission rules, there appears to have been no issue recognizing his membership later, similar to what we see with the Montreal crew. Because we don't know who else may have been made in the 1960s, it's hard to say who else may or may not have been recognized later.

Re: Patrick DeFilippo inducted in the 60s?
Great info B., it definitely seems like Pat was inducted during the conflict. I wonder if Galante somehow “ratified” Pat after the DeFilippos came back to NY in the late 70s and Vito was made capo.
