Have to give Spilotro a break on this one. Muggheria is Sicilian. The word for wife in Italian is moglie. Spilotro's family came from Bari, opposite coast of Naples.Villain wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:59 am https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rSyssOFoA-U

Bari is definitely not near Naples. Unless you consider the diametrically opposite coast "near". Their dialects are no way near being similar either.
Re: Frank Cullotta has Covid-19
I corrected the wording. As for the dialect, one source says this: "Bari dialect is a dialect of Neapolitan spoken in the Apulia and Basilicata regions of Italy."

Correct, Barese is a local dialect of Napuletano. Napuletano referring to the popular language spoken in the former Kingdom of Naples, rather than Napoli proper, of course.

Guys, if you simply look at a Map of Italy, there are 5 DIFFERENT regions in the South:
1), Campania (Naples)
2). Puglia (Bari)
3). Basilicata
4). Calabria
5). Sicily
Each region has it's own dialect that is a little different than the other. No?
Anyway, the point is that Spilotro probably couldn't speak Italian anyway so it would not have mattered if his parents came from Sicily or Bari.

The dialects of the south are on a dialect continuum but they're categorized under two languages -- Napulitano and Sicilianu. Campania, Abruzzo, Molise, Basilicata, and parts of Calabria and Puglia (along with the southern fringes of Lazio and Marche that historically were part of the Kingdom of Naples) speak local dialects that are all closely related enough that they're considered variants of Napulitano. The Salento area in Puglia and the part of Calabria south of Cosenza speak local variants of Sicilianu.Confederate wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 12:13 am Guys, if you simply look at a Map of Italy, there are 5 DIFFERENT regions in the South:

And yes Spilotro did state on the tape that he didn't speak much Italian. And only his father, FWIW was Barese. His mother was born in the US to Sicilian parents. Given that his father died when he was relatively young and his mother was American he may have not been exposed to as much Italian as someone like Lombardo (both parents immigrated from Bari) or DiFronzo (first generation kid who was born in Bari) for example.

Re: Frank Cullotta has Covid-19
Also just to further comment. Patsy Spilotro arrived in the US as a teenager from Bari. By the time he married Tony's mother he had been in Chicago about 15 years. Given this fact and the fact that his mother was American born of Sicilian background, I'd strongly suspect that Tony's parents communicated mainly in English (as their native dialects were quite different from each other). The language question is a complicated and nuanced one and language use varied a lot between families of course depending on when and where they arrived from Italy.

Re: Frank Cullotta has Covid-19
Barese dialect is pretty similar to napuletan’, but still very distinctive. Napulatan and Barese are the most similar to each other. A Barese might understand a Napoletan but a Neapolitan might not understand a Barese, if that makes sense. And mugghiere in Barese is meghir’ (pronounces meg-yire) so kinda similar.
Re: Frank Cullotta has Covid-19
Barese and Italian are essentially different languages that both evolved from Latin. For example in Italian the word for wine is vino, from Latin vinum. The Barese word for wine is mirre, from the Latin merum. Many words are mutually unintelligible with Italian, but many are.

Interesting that Collutta claims that he doesn't believe that Bill Bonanno was really made...
I'm pretty sure he was.
As well as he claims the FBI wanted him to claim HE was a made guy, but he would say only in LV he was made
