Cutolo

Post by vmw100475 »

Long time member of Real Deal and now this forum.....I very rarely post....however, there are some interesting FBI documents on Mary Ferrell site from 1970s regarding Bill Cutolo I though might be worth posting about....a lot has been posted on Cutolo but I have not seen much about his early days,,,,.documents from the 1970s show he was closely assoicated with Whitey Troipiano...seems this is who he probabl got his start with.....documents seem to show Cutolo was be pretty serious gangster by the mid-1970s, when he still would have been fairly young.....the subject of the documents seem to show that he had a relationship with a corrupt FBI agent named Jospeh Stabile....Stabile seems to be a source of information on investigations for Cutolo and Troipiano....some of the documents are summaries of interviews of Cutolo himself, Troipiano himself, Charles Panerella by the FBI investigating whether Stabile had in fact been corrupted....also seems Cutolo did some business with Scarpa and was involved in the murder of another associate named James Nagi....anyway, found it was interesting, as I have not seen much discussed about Cutolo background before the 1980s....sorry if what I wrote is just a rehash of information already posted.

I’ve never read up on Cutolo in Mary Ferrell, I’d love to hear more. Tropiano was Cutolo’s godfather.

LCNBios mentioned on the board at one point that Bill Cutolo started out as a DeCavalcante associate under Frank Cocchiaro. I haven't seen those reports myself, though I've seen some about Cocchiaro recruiting a group of tough, younger associates in Brooklyn that presumably included Cutolo. If tht's the case, would seem he transferred to Tropiano at one point as it's been established he was close with him and of course he ended up in that family.

Another who got his start under Cocchiaro in that era was future Gambino member Robert DiBernardo. That would be two major up-and-comers who ended up transferring to other families.

The DeCavalcante Family, while primarily based in Jersey, had a faction in New York that was located in Brooklyn and the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The early Caporegime of this faction was Frank Cocchiaro who traced his ancestry back to Ribera, Sicily like most DeCav members. DiBernardo and Cutolo both came up under him but were made into different Families.

The DeCavalcante Brooklyn crew was closely intertwined with the Colombo family, particularly the Rotondos, Farone, Talese, the Gallos and that crowd. Many from both factions lived or grew up in the area around Red Hook and Carroll Gardens, but included a presence further south and Staten Island later on. A lot of association between those families. Remember too that Vinny Palermo's brother was a made member of the Colombos.

Aside from Frank Cocchiaro, there was little presence from Ribera in the Brooklyn crew from what I can see. The Manhattan crew was more connected to the Ribera element, which isn't surprising considering many of the early Riberese mafiosi lived in Manhattan before NJ and Chicago. The Brooklyn / Staten Island DeCavalcante faction was close to Jimmy Sarullo of the Gambino family, who had Riberese heritage and was one of the first people who reported the D'Amato gay rumors to DeCavalcante members.

I don't know the specifics on Cutolo's relationship to the DeCavalcantes, only going by what was shared here by a reliable researcher.

To add to this; through 1989, Colombo soldier Joseph "Joe Smash" Gambale, who was reportedly close to both Cutolo and Theodore Persico Sr., operated a social club in Park Slope with DeCavalcante captain Rudy Farone, according to this article by the New York Sun:
https://www.nysun.com/new-york/unauthor ... ther/1194/

Unfortunately, information about Gambale's activities is scant, even though he continued to be a remember of Cutolo's crew through the latter part of the 1990s. It seems that he was not too close with the rest of Cutolo's crew members.
