6 Lucchese crime family members admit to massive gambling ring
on June 18, 2015 at 11:52 AM
TRENTON —
Six members of the New York-based Lucchese crime family, including a ruling boss in New York and a top captain in New Jersey, have pleaded guilty to running a multi-billion-dollar gambling enterprise built upon extortion and violence, state authorities said Thursday.
The men were indicted in 2010 after an investigation uncovered the gambling ring, which, according to records, transacted an estimated $2.2 billion in wagers, primarily on sporting events, during a 15-month period. The operation allegedly received and processed the wagers using password-protected websites and a Costa Rican "wire room."
Authorities said the investigation, led by the state Division of Criminal Justice, also revealed a scheme in which a former New Jersey corrections officer and a high-ranking member of the Nine Trey Gangsters set of the Bloods street gang entered into an alliance with the Lucchese family to smuggle drugs and pre-paid cell phones into East Jersey State Prison.
The alleged gangster, Edwin Spears, who was an inmate, formed the alliance in concert with the former officer, Michael Bruinton, authorities said. Charges are pending against them.
Among those who pleaded guilty Wednesday were Ralph V. Perna, 69, of East Hanover, who oversaw the crime family's operations in New Jersey, as well as his two of his sons: Joseph Perna, 45, of Wyckoff, and John Perna, 38, of West Caldwell, authorities said.
Under the plea deal, prosecutors will recommend eight years in prison for Ralph Perna and 10 years in prison for his two sons. Charges against a third son, Ralph M. Perna, 43, of West Caldwell, are pending, authorities said.
Also pleading guilty were Martin Taccetta, 64, formerly of East Hanover and a former New Jersey underboss, who is already serving a life sentence as a result of a state prosecution in the 1990s; John Mangrella, 72, of Clifton, a senior member of the family; and Matthew Madonna, 80, of Seldon, N.Y., a member of the three-man ruling panel of the family.
Charges are pending against a second alleged ruling member, Joseph DiNapoli, 79, of Scarsdale, N.Y., authorities said. Under the plea deal, prosecutors will recommend five years in prison for Madonna, and eight years for Mangrella and Taccetta.

Anyone know who's running Jersey while Perna is away, Giampa?
Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
It says 2010, but I recall this happening in 2007. I can't believe how long this thing got drawn out.

Still a real long time for a case , I always thought there was something wrong , And prosecutors recommend only five years in prison for Madonna , That seems very low He will do a little over 3 years this is a State case
Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
Probably his brother Michael who is in a half way house by poroxy of his son Joe who is a soldier. I would suspect that Michael is the real power anyways dispite the fact that he has been in prison since 93'. Ralph visited him at least a few times a month when he was moved from Lewisburg to Fairton south jersey. More than likely Ralph was made because of Mike and more then likely promoted to capo to hold the seat for Mike.TommyGambino wrote:Anyone know who's running Jersey while Perna is away, Giampa?
Hey only took nearly 7yrs for these guys to plead out. They were charged by the state in Dec 07.
Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
State indicted in 07. Feds indicted in 2010. They will do fed time concurrent with the state time! They don't see the inside of state prison. They will do more time in federal jail. That's why the feds indicted them.joeycigars wrote:They where arrested December 18, 2007, The article says they where indicted 2010 ,B. wrote:It says 2010, but I recall this happening in 2007. I am surprised they got 10yrs for gambling. John that is. little Joe was nabbed in the prison heroin smuggling racket so I can see ten yrs for him. but John got hammered. Ouch!

Will be interesting to see if Mike Taccetta takes over the crew, he's out next yearRocco wrote:Probably his brother Michael who is in a half way house by poroxy of his son Joe who is a soldier. Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
I meant Mike Perna who gets released from a halfway house this summer. Mike Taccetta is supposedly not recognized by NY but that's an old rumor. I would imagine NY would take envelopes from anyone. But Mike T and Mike P had a falling out yrs ago. I find it funny that they sentenced Marty T to 8yrs even though he is doing life plus ten yrs lol. Oh well at least it got him out of Rahway for the day.TommyGambino wrote:Will be interesting to see if Mike Taccetta takes over the crew, he's out next yearRocco wrote:Probably his brother Michael who is in a half way house by poroxy of his son Joe who is a soldier. Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
One recent article on the guilty pleas said Madonna is on a 3 man panel running the family but that must be what is now outdated info from the administration at the time of the arrests in 2007 - when it was Madonna, DiNapoli, and Migliore.
All roads lead to New York.
Re: Luchese family guilty pleas
Almost all the info given is based on the info released from the indictment nearly seven yrs ago. These guys spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on attorney's over the last six plus yrs to get a good plea deal based on gambling. Seems the attorney general's office was not budging as they all plead out to some heavy sentence's. I think there was two factors in the case that made the AG not budge on the RICO part. The prison smuggling scheme and the fact that they had them bugged and surveillance from the making cermony in Toms River for John and his cousin Joe. And the fact they all had priors. Ralph and his sons had just been released from prison on gambling charges when they targeted little Joe and bugged his car and cell. Once these guys are sentenced they will begin targeting Mike P and his son Joe most likely. The NJ Luccheses bookmaking is still very active.Wiseguy wrote:One recent article on the guilty pleas said Madonna is on a 3 man panel running the family but that must be what is now outdated info from the administration at the time of the arrests in 2007 - when it was Madonna, DiNapoli, and Migliore.
