Is Pittsburgh alive?

Post by JoeTheBoss »

Whats the skinny on Pittsburgh? I thought they were defunct but I've been reading some about them and it seems they may not be defunct, just laying low, running gambling ops and what not. Seems to be the trend, long thought dead LCN families coming back from the 'dead'. Buffalo and Springfield being the best examples. Any thoughts on Pittsburgh? Any evidence? Thanks

They're history.

A bunch of old gamblers and loan sharks are still around and always will be, but they aren't kicking up to a mob family.

The surviving guys were criminals before the family collapsed so they aren't going to stop it's what they kno, they likely run small bookmaking/loansharking operations with longtime customers without the power they once had. There's no organized crime family left though i don't think, i've never been to Pittsburgh in my life so i obviously can't say for sure but that's what the evidence shows.

Pogo or Wiseguy can probably give you a list of living members and any activity from them in recent years that clearly illustrates that.

No, they went the way of the dodo bird. A few months ago we had a thread where Wiseguy lists members who are still alive in these smaller families. For Pittsburgh Tommy Ciancutti is the only one left.

Good hell, and people wonder why some of us argue so strenuously against this idea. Because this is where it goes. With enough time, we'll be back up to two dozen families from coast to coast.

Surveillance photo of Joe Todaro and Sonny Ciancutti. Word is, they were sharing tips on how to have more regular bowl movements.

Huh? Where did this come from? Springfeild was one of the first families to go. Died out in the 1970s.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Oh this is why!?! So you're the stupid question prevention squad, this forums very own neighborhood watch. I guess you'll have to argue even more strenuously then before because the 'Is this Defunct Family still alive' threads are still coming and clearly you don't want it to go there.

The guy has an allergy to gossip, which this site mostly is, i dont get it. Still, from what i interpret, these small cities have loose knit cells mainly doing mainly some gambling, some loansharking, and maybe (only in some cases) backing some big drug shipments. Obviously they are not structured families with a boss, underboss, ect, there doesnt need to be. The guys doing this are guys with ties to the old organisations, but all thats left is small crews of guys doing criminal stuff. Sure they could start "making" new guys and doing all the position stuff but in their case it would just be cheesy and pointless because they are not needed to maintain order in a massive organisation. Simple as that. A traditional hierarchy is only needed when theres several dozen ambitious criminals and 100 or more associates to manage.

What gets me is how it seems some people actually wish the mob was still active in their region, like it would somehow improve their life. A lot of mob rackets just got taken over by legitimate business. Gambling, loan sharking (high interest loans, payday loans, etc). Wall St. took a page from the mob and bought them out. I know the Genovese was active in real estate scams and that's supposedly what kept them strong but I can't see them doing anything that the legit real estate industry hasn't picked up on and found legal loopholes around. At the end of the day all that's left is drugs.
Glick told author Nicholas Pileggi that he expected to meet a banker-type individual, but instead, he found Alvin Baron to be a gruff, tough-talking cigar-chomping Teamster who greeted him with, “What the fuck do you want?”

I wish I could find where i read it but supposedly years back maybe in the 90s and early 2000s it was said Genovese members moved in to consolidate and support remaining activity and union rackets including kicking up, Dont quote me on that because i cannot find or remember where i read it
