That’s probably it, Bonanno comes across as a week old fool on that 60 minutes thing....but maybe he’s a good actor.
Galante as underboss probably helped. Also Bonanno was not averse to violence, Bill tells a story of when a member was shelved and sent to Italy(I believe, the details are a bit fuzzy in my head) for a few years. He tried to come back earlier, and they killed him once he was found.

Sure Sonny Red and Carmine was close I read somewhere no Galante hit no three capo hit no boventre no George etc but coulda woulda shoulda
The Sicilians obviously went along with it, and probably benefitted from his death. I imagine he was draining them financially pretty good from junk sales, etc.
-
But it would always be the NYC commission that voted his death; Gambino, Genovese, Colombo, etc.... even his Bonanno hierarchy would have to approve or there’d be a war afterwards..... but there was NO war! Which only confirms that it was a sanctioned hit!
Do you know if Phil Lucky and the other 2 capos were Galante loyalists Maxi? I know they were killed a few years later, but I wonder if they tried to take over from Rastelli in response to the Galante hit, or if they just saw an opportunity?

The Bonannos and their power struggles! I find it all so interesting
Kid, I’m sorry. I really don’t know where their loyalties were. If I had to toss the dice I’d say Sonny Red Indelicato being a Mulberry st guy would be near Lilo. But his son Bruno was one of the shooters of Lilo you know? .... so who knows! These alignments and loyalties shift like the sand often times with these guys!
According to Vitale, Big Trin was one of the shooters at Joe & Mary's. You have to understand that they may have been Lilo loyalists but, in the end, there's no honor among thieves.

He became Boss at 26 and ruled for 30+ years. He kept people in line by killing those who got out of it.

He was quite old when he did that interview. He was well past his prime. Let's not forget he tried to kill the commission.
Something similar happened with Magaddino, when he got up there in age and lost control of his family.

To everyone's knowledge, what all did Vitale, Massino, Coppa et al. Officially say about the Galante murder July 12th, 1979?

Who did they name as the shooters and backup drivers etc.?
"People always underestimate me, Don."

<>

"You know what the real difference is between crooks and lawmen, Warden?

[Warden] Try me.

What side of the bars they're on."
