IGNAZIO (SONNY) CANNONE - born 1925 in NYC. aka: “Ignatius”, “Nat”, “Nate”. Raised (6 Garfield Avenue) and later resided for many years in the Endicott area (210 Madison Avenue) in upstate New York. He would later relocate back to Brooklyn (5909 23rd Avenue) where he would stay and settle in.
-
Criminal record # - FBI # 198352D

Identified originally as a Barbara Family soldier who later transferred membership to the Bonanno Family.
———
Born of Castellammarese heritage,
he was a nephew by marriage to Barbara Family boss Giuseppe (Joe) Barbara, Sr., and “godson” of Bonanno Capo Natale Evola. (both of whom trace their heritage to Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily).

Brother to Barbara Family soldier Frank Cannone, and the son of “possible” member Diego Cannone (some sources allege his dad was an old-time Mafioso also).

Note: [Sonny Cannone was known as an expensive and sharp dresser]
———
Activities: gambling rackets, illicit alcohol-bootlegging (liquor-tax violations).
———
With the notorious 1957 “Apalachin Mob Meeting”, Ignazio Cannone was first officially recognized and identified by the FBI as an (inducted) “Barbara Family” soldier. He was also one of the youngest attendee’s (32y) recorded at the mob summit.

Known to frequent and operate in the Endicott, Endwell and Binghamton upstate area, and later New York City and South Florida.
———
Criminal Associates:
-
Giuseppe (Joe) Barbara Sr.
Rosario (Russ) Bufalino
Anthony (Gov) Guarnieri
Natale (Joe Diamond) Evola
Pasquale (Patsy) Turrigiano
Emmanuel (Manny) Zicari
Remo Allio
Angelo Guimento
Angelo (Sandy) Sciandra
Bartolo Guccia
Frank Cannone
———
At the time of the Apalachin meeting Cannone was actively operating two cocktails lounges in the Endicott area:
-
Nat’s Place, Endicott, NY
The Plaza Lounge, Endwell, NY

After Apalachin, with all the adverse publicity and public exposure that it generated, Sonny Cannone ended up losing both liquor licenses.

The SLA (State Liquor Authority) used his alleged mob ties as an excuse to revoke both licenses, deeming him unfit to run licensed premises. They essentially put him out of business!
———
Several years after all the government investigations and probes had died down, and with Joe Barbara’s death, Cannone decided to relocate back to the Brooklyn, New York area where he originated from.

He was reputed by LE to have switched his membership, transferring to the NYC Bonanno Family. His “godfather” (Joe Diamond) Evola would ease his way into that Family, Eventually Evola would rise to head the Family. So it probably was a wise move by Sonny Cannone.
———
He had a minor criminal record since 1946 for:
-
1946 disorderly conduct (dice game)
1950 disorderly conduct (fight with an off-duty cop) and
resisting arrest
1955 liquor law violations
1959 conspiracy to obstruct justice (for refusing to testify before the grand jury during the Apalachin affair) for which in 1960 he was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment - later overturned on appeal.

I don’t believe Sonny was ever jailed!
———
LE had said of Cannone “a younger Mafia member who is rising rapidly in the organization. With Mafia associates he controls illicit alcohol traffic and gambling in the central New York State area.”
-
In later years little was heard from Sonny although during the late 1980’s he was alleged by LE to be partnering with his brother Frank in bookmaking operations spanning both the NYC and Upstate NY area.
——-
Ignazio (Sonny) Cannone is believed to have died in 2011 at age 85..... he may have passed away in Florida where he was known to own a condo and live part of the year.

Generosso Pope was his name, I think. In that movie dramatization, they made it seem the Tresca murder was related to the pressure he was putting on businessmen like Pope, who were close to the mafia.

I always wondered why the Bonnanos weren't bigger in construction, just based on Pope.

I agree, hes a VERY underrated figure in LCN history... seemed to be very powerful, linked to politics and big business on both sides of the Atlantic...
I forgot to tell you, Generoso Pope was an extremely wealthy businessman and publisher of the famed “Il Progresso” Italian newspaper published in America
Generoso Pope was close to Frank Costello.

It was information presented in several places. One very good source was either the 1983 or 1988 US senate Hearings (or both) where he was now listed as a Bonanno Soldier on their membership chart living back in Brooklyn. They provided his name of course, criminal records number, dob, and address in Brooklyn.
-
And remember Joe Diamond Evola was his godfather. In subsequent government reports about Frank Cannone, his brother, LE advises that although now based in NYC with the Bonanno’s he was still partnered with Frank in bookmaking as I wrote.
-
He also either completely later relocated to Florida or had a part time place down there

Not saying you’re wrong just didn’t know that. Frank was heavily involved in my area as pretty much one of the last Monica s OC the original bufalino guys when he was probably in his 60s or later. If I remember correctly in the 89 pa crime commission report he was listed as one of the the active members over 65. It just adds to what I’ve said before regarding Bufalino, Maggadino and Sciandra. Lots of blood relatives/relatives by marriage in almost all of the 5 families plus Philly, La and Tampa.

With Costello it was more than that. It had to do with the politics in Italy at the time especially with regard to Benito Mussolini. Generoso Pope's son called Costello Uncle Frank. There is a book that was published in 2010 titled "The Deeds Of My Fathers, How My Grandfather and Father Built New York and Created The Tabloid World Of Today" It is written by Paul David Pope, Generoso Pope's grandson. The book can be acquired free online and downloaded as a pdf file. The book is 433 pages with illustrations. Costello is a prominent figure and mentioned throughout the book. Generoso Pope's association (or affiliation) with Costello is more than a simple matter of mutual admiration. Read the book. If anyone is interested the book is available for download (free pdf file, 6.18MB) at the following link:

Agreed!.... they were all a very well connected crew. Thru Buffalo, NYC (Bonanno especially - Castellammarese heritage you know, and Montedoro), Detroit, etc.....between Joe Barbara, John Sciandra, Steve LaTorre and Santo Volpe.... these were all highly respected powerhouses nationally
-
I have both Senate Hearings books of all documents and testimony. You can probably get it at a top library. Good reading!
