I remember Christie put together a good one a few years back. I'm sure he can post it again.

I didn't bother to list all the Scarfo era guy's who were in prison by the time Stanfa took over.

As for the crew make ups it is hard to determine since everything was one big cluster under Stanfa. As best as I can figure John Veasey, Tommy Scafidi, Raymond Esposito and Sergio Battaglia were with Pagano and or direct wth Martines while Vince Felipelli and Joey Stanfa reported direct to Stanfa. I'm not sure if Tripodi had any active Soldiers for long. He seems to have been mostly out of it by late 1992. Sparacio seems to have had the older left overs from the Bruno era. He too seems to have been mostly out of by mid 1993.

Great work Pogo.

No wonder Stanfa was one of the weakest bosses, pretty much all the top guys were made then promoted in the same year, crazy.

To be fair, Philly has a long history of guys coming up in a short amount of time. When Scarfo became boss, he made a bunch of captains and an underboss who had been in less than a year. Some other guys who got bumped over the next couple of years hadn't been in for more than a couple years either.

You can even go back farther... Angelo Bruno had only been made for ~5 years when he became boss, which I think goes against "public perception", and Phil Testa hadn't been a member for long before he became a captain. Joe Bruno Dovi had only been in for a couple years if he was actually the underboss in 1931.

In those days it was probably more about finding guys with the right qualities, though, and once they were members and understood the rules it didn't matter how much time they had put in. The difference is Stanfa was really scraping the bottom of the barrel with most of his guys, like Martines, Pagano, Tripodi, etc. Not with Ciancaglini, though... all of the Ciancaglinis were leadership material by all accounts.

John Ciancaglini seems to know what he's doing. People like him and, say, Mazzone were what I was talking about when I made my inarticulate "admired" comment about the Merlino faction the other day. And I still think the Stanfa-ites make many of the Merlino faction members look like Niccolo Machiavelli in comparison.

I'm reading Robert Simone's autobiography right now and was surprised to see Pagano show up in it years before the Stanfa regime. I was under the impression that Stanfa had recruited him out of nowhere.

Where the hell did Tripodi come from? The moon?

Pagano went back a long time in South Philly as a low-level associate but was living in Florida through most of the 1980s. Haven't been able to confirm if he hooked up with the Scarfo guys down there or not when they visisted.

Tripodi immigrated to the US from Calabria and had a construction business and restaurant in Philly. No idea how he first got hooked up with Stanfa, but it wouldn't surprise me if they met socially and Stanfa took a liking to him because he spoke fluent Italian. At most he might have done a little sportsbetting but I doubt he was even an associate before Stanfa came along. He still lives in Philly but isn't connected to the family anymore. He and George Anastasia are friendly with one another, funnily enough.

Here is a photo of Tripodi.

Great info and photo, B. It's hard to find anything about Tripodi.

I could be off base with this, but Nicky Buck and Shotsie, like Joe Ciancaglini, both struck me as competent guys who were "too good" for the Stanfa mob.

Does anyone on here have access to the Philidelphia Inquirer archives? There is a picture of Curro in an article from 2001.

Where in Calabria is this Tripodi from? There is a Tripodi ndrina. I would be suspicious he is somehow connected to that ndrina.
