African-American gangs and the Mafia

Post by Mukremin »

I remember a part in Raab's Five families book, where there was a small war going on with the militant Black Panthers and the New Ark branch of the Luccheses. Several hits were carried out by the mafia. Anyone has info on that? Or any other confrontation with African-American gangs.

I don't recall if it involved the Black Panthers. Supposedly, black numbers operators started to move into Lucchese territory and Accetturo had some of them killed.
All roads lead to New York.

I have checked it, he mentiones the Black Panthers. Didn't know the Black Panthers were fully engaged in rackets, i always thought they had a religious background.

Rosario "Russell" Cochiaro of the DeCavalcante's was beaten up by the Black Panthers in Brooklyn back in the 60s. I'm not sure if he was made at the time but his father Frank was a Capo. Sam DeCavalcante forbade any retaliation because he didn't want a war with the Panthers.

I remember this. It was Mike T who shot a black numbers guy in the back of the head in Newark. Also, Tino from the Genovese beat a black numbers guy to death and threw him in a landfill. But none of these were panthers..just blacks threatening LCN gambling rackets in Newark.

Didn't Sam Giancana have a number of them whacked in order to take over the numbers rackets in the 40s?

KC used a black group who called themselves the black mafia to do a couple of high profile hits, one against a black community activist and city council member Leon Jordan, and the other a federal witness in a gambling investigation Sol Landy. They caught the guys in the landy case pretty quick but only got a low level guy name Frankoviglia, the Jordan case was solved about 2 years ago, of course everyone is dead, but it did name a low level guy named Joe Centemano and it named Nick Civella.
In 14 years the bitch will be a real money earner, yes sir........

Yes, Absolutely. The Taylor St. Crew moved in to take control of the numbers Rackets from the Blacks back in the 1940's.
The biggest operator was a guy named Teddy Roe. He actually killed Marshall Caifano's brother at the beginning of the war before the Taylor St. crew killed him and a couple of his guys.

Was this the guy that Giancana met and befriended in prison then took over his operations, maybe even kidnapped him or someone close to him? Then brought millions into the outfit catapulting his rise in the outfit? What a sneaky brilliant move  if true.

Yeah I believe the Outfit got into the numbers business late compared to NY because they thought it was a penny ante racket and didn't bother with it. That was until Sam Giacana brought yo their attention how lucratice it really was.
