Re: Mafia recruits
Definitely not. Just pointing out how it is a bit of myth about LE ignoring the mob before the 1980s since a large portion, if not a majority, of the guys have did time in the decades before then.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Re: Mafia recruits
the point is that they fought it as it was not a mafia group but a normal gang, same in italy when there were not all the current anti-mafia laws... yes, some members was arrested and did some times in prison, but rarely sentenced to life, hard sentences, there were not rats who testimonied in a trial, no witness protection program, no rico etc.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 12:46 pm Definitely not. Re: Mafia recruits
A lot of guys got hard sentences, one guy in the NYPD Mafia file book did 37 years, his name was Sebu, or a similar spelling. Time was harder and tougher than too, and don''t forget that cops and guards could knock the shit out of anyone they felt like. Harry Mainone and Frank Abbadasher (sp?) went to the electric chair. Most old time members did reform school time, and had such a rough time growing up that to some, prison was not so bad. The guys growing up in a nice area, in a safe environment are not going to stand up to prison as well.scagghiuni wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 2:16 pmthe point is that they fought it as it was not a mafia group but a normal gang, same in italy when there were not all the current anti-mafia laws... yes, some members was arrested and did some times in prison, but rarely sentenced to life, hard sentences, there were not rats who testimonied in a trial, no witness protection program, no rico etc.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 12:46 pm Definitely not. Re: RE: Re: Mafia recruits
At the same time mob members had a lot more priviliges in prison than nowadays. The scenes in Goodfellas showing the boys in prison were accurate. Prison life wasn't that bad for mobsters back then because of their influence and power outside. Many guards could be bribed and some guys lived like royalty in prison with plenty of room, good food, many friends around and perhaps even had access to women. It's not that hard doing time like that.bert wrote:A lot of guys got hard sentences, one guy in the NYPD Mafia file book did 37 years, his name was Sebu, or a similar spelling. In Canada shit like that still happens. Desjardins was treated like a king when he was inside. Over there it's comparable to what you see in a movie such as Un Prophete.

Re: Mafia recruits
Once the fear factor is gone, the temptation to become an Informant is very attractive. It has always been a combination of fear and loyalty that has kept LCN together. However, if push comes to shove, fear has been the stronger element. In 2019, the "fear factor" of Mob reprisal from informing has been drastically reduced to almost being non existent. Years ago, the fear factor was much greater. Just ask Sammy Gravano, Kurt Calabrese, etc. etc.
They are not afraid of anything.

Henry Hill or Scorsese exaggerated greatly in Goodfellas. Prison is no picnic and never was.Lupara wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:02 pmAt the same time mob members had a lot more priviliges in prison than nowadays. Re: Mafia recruits
I would think that the problem is you can't send a guy to Florida or California in Canada's witness protection. While I know parts of British Columbia are nice, the thought of being moved to Moose Jaw or Edmonton probably isn't very appetizing to a gangster.scagghiuni wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 12:58 pmis there a witness protection program? i've never heard of any rat from canada
