New Technologies that spell the end of O.C.

Post by 500YearReign »

Let's face it the U.S. is becoming more and more each day a big brother type society with massive total information awareness. Deploying facial recognition, body and vehicle scanners, license plate readers, RFID scanners, imsi catchers and an assortment of other devices.

Me thinks the state of the mafia and other organized crime groups will be in serious decline these coming decades for the simple fact that they cannot compete with the likes of intelligence agencies federal and state as well as local law enforcement which are equipped with high technology to combat crime.

Imagine if all containers at the ports or intermodal were 100% scanned...this would cripple many groups and cartels.

What's the forums take on new technology and the resulting survival rate of organized crime?

A lot of this stuff is already being used and it hasn't made a dent in crime/OC in this country. Besides the system will run out of money long before most of this stuff will be able to be implemented in a widespread way (think The Wire Season 5 for a cinematic example).

The technology of putting tracking devices in trucks cut down drastically on truck cargo theft. Since then the gangs that use technology to override it are the only ones capable of getting around it. Also the Mafia or any long time American criminals in The Untied States are not as hooked up overseas as gangs that formed over the past 40 years, and they can't send items overseas like other groups. Even small time robbers and stick up men such as drug addicts are getting caught robbing pharmacies when they get handed the pills they ask for at gunpoint .The clerks give them bottles with tracking chips, they get caught right away.

Interesting thoughts guys. Pogo you may be right on the system failing moneywise and not being able to implement... Stroccos and Slim I agree someone is always going to take the grease... Bert that was informative, was not aware they had tracking chips in medicine bottles when they get robbed.

To hypothesize further: If massive vehicle/body scanning were implemented and I mean in such a way that an entire metropolis was covered, it could severely diminish illegal concealed carry of weapons. I think that situation in itself would significantly change the way organized criminals do business.

How would they adapt to such circumstances?

I saw about the bottles on a newscast, it showed surveillance video of a pharmacy being stuck up, and the clerk going the gunman a bottle that they are told to give in such cases. The guy and his partners were tracked down right away. I did not like them showing it, since the clerk might have been put in danger for what she did, and it instructs robbers to pick their own bottle or check them for chips. It's a tip off to crooks on how to avoid getting caught.

It is already happening to a degree. Many small towns and municipalities across the country are already broke. There was a story recently on some town/small city (forgot where but it was somewhere in the Midwest) where the cops are telling the citizens to buy a gun, a guard dog and install some new locks because they were no longer able to respond to most of the calls coming in.

Ditto for several big cities. Chicongo is damn near bankrupt at this point. So much so that the local government is considering legalizing gambling and marijuana in order to bring in some much needed funds. Their clearance rate in already in the toilet with something like less than 10% (or some rediculous number like that) of shootings being solved and the murder clearance rate not much better. Same for NY with the local government looking to tax everything and anyone to stay above water. Crime has been also been increasing there as well. The financial strains are only going to get worse as time goes on.

Organized crime in America will never end, there's always going to be a large portion of the American people either so desperate for money that they go around the law or people with not enough of a conscience to resist large sums of money without needing a college degree or a hard work ethic. That won't ever change. As soon as the government puts a stop to one criminal racket a new one will open up.

The faces, the races of the criminals may change but there will always be OC in America

Funny you mention Chicago, only a few minutes ago on radio they mentioned a record number of shootings this weekend, 52 I think, 8 dead.

You also said: "The financial strains are only going to get worse as time goes on"

Pogo, it's going to happen only if they keep bailing out citied and states with insane tax and immigration policies. Connecticut was always considered safe, but crime has risen there over the past years, and they are taxing people more. They want to tax residents for driving. Meanwhile they cannot build schools fast enough to keep up with immigration, so all the tax and lottery money goes to that. In other words, you are right on the finale strain.

Not really an issue since the LCN is almost completely a domestic operation.

It is an issue for the reason I mentioned.

Money always talks. Somebody operates the scanners. And there's a trend of privatizing law enforcement which will ultimately result in lower wages, making them more vulnerable to corruption.
Glick told author Nicholas Pileggi that he expected to meet a banker-type individual, but instead, he found Alvin Baron to be a gruff, tough-talking cigar-chomping Teamster who greeted him with, “What the fuck do you want?”

It's the end for us all. Your tv can see you and your phone is recording you. Or both.
If you live on the east coast they have some tolls that you drive through, it takes your pic and sends you the bill.
We are being tracked, I've seen more places that don't take cash. When it was good ... it was cash only.
