Joseph Sabato (not the Genovese member)

Post by B. »

Does anyone have info on a Joseph Sabato who was associated / possibly a member with the DeCavalcante family? His father Giuseppe was an early member of the Philadelphia family and Joseph was involved in gambling operations for the DeCavalcantes in Trenton. I don't believe there is any relation to the Pepe Sabato in the Genovese group. These ones were originally from Enna, which is where some other members of the Philly family were originally from (Riccobenes for example).

I have seen his name listed as a member (or suspected member) of the Decavalcante Family on one of the FBI lists found on Mary Ferrell. I can´t say for sure, but there may be more info on him found on there. He shares the same name with the Genovese Sabato which can be a little tricky when loking for info on him.
There you have it, never printed before.

Yeah, that's the same trouble I've had with him. He was invited to a DeCavalcante Christmas party that was only members and proposed members.

The reason I'm interested in him is that there are supposed to have been DeCavalcante members active in the Trenton/Philadelphia area, but I'm only aware of a few. When NY ruled semi-recently that the DeCavalcantes could only recruit from their traditional areas of Jersey and Philadelphia is what is especially confusing.

The only members I'm aware of who were active in that area (all Trenton) are:

Francesco DeCavalcante (originally in North Jersey, then operated in Trenton before moving back North)
Sam DeCavalcante (before he moved back to North Jersey)
Girolamo Guarraggi
Joseph Sabato (possible member)

The other question is why Sabato got hooked up with the DeCavs when his father was made in Philadelphia and they lived in that area.

Another Trenton DeCavalcante member was Joseph "Tracey" Giordano. He was close to Sam DeCavalcante when he lived in Trenton and also Johnny Keys. He seems to have been the DeCav's main man in Trenton.

Do you mean Soldier John Giordano who died in 1997? Or is this another guy and if so are they related? Thanks.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

B, I dug up some articles on Joseph J. Sabato. They may not help you out a lot, but it´s a start atleast. He lived at 2259 North Spruce Street, Trenton. He was arrested several times in the 1960s/1970s for gambling. In 1961 he was arrested and convicted for running a numbers bank, fined 1,000.00 dollars. Some interesting names mentioned in there, among them Anthony Tassone and Nicky Russo (Gambino soldier). His daughter married a Dr Robert J. Ballisty of Philadelphia and a Robert DeCavalcanti served as one of the ushers when his son Joseph the third married Joan Mottola. In 1970 he was indicted and charged for conspracy in a gambling case. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months and fined 1,000.00 dollars. In the articles, there are no mentions of him being a member of organized crime.

This is his obituary:

And this is his entry in the SSDI:

Est. Age at Death: 67 years, 5 months
Last known residence:

I can´t upload the articles but if you are interested in reading them, PM me an email address and I´ll send them to you.

Nice, thanks for sharing that brother.

There's no doubt he was involved in organized crime and did business with the DeCavalcantes, just a question of whether he ended up getting made and maintained a connection to them through the years. Still weird to me he didn't end up with Philly like his father... guessing he got connected with Sam DeCav when he was living in Trenton.

I assume Robert DeCavalcanti is related to the more famous ones... there are records of a Robert DeCavalcante in Trenton. The DeCavalcantes also used different spellings of their names... census records show the family name spelled "DiCavalcanti" for example.
