It was not a social club, but a candy store. It's still there, but Arabs have owned and run it for 35 years, but you could have seen the spot where he stood at for a few of the surveillance photos of him standing were taken. While it is not like seeing him, or anyone, you were only a 5 minute walk away.
Ah damn must have missed it. I always thought their candy store was in South Brooklyn.

Fortunato Brothers Bakery was great, good coffee and good pastries. Alleged murderer and Genovese associate Mario ‘the Baker’ Fortunato was there talking to three old men, all of whom speaking Italian. Myself and Mario & Co. were the only people there and they kept staring at me (although maybe it’s because I was staring at them).
He's no longer an alleged murderer, not only was his conviction overturned, he sued and get money for a wrongful conviction. The pasties there are the best. I am curious, are you a little surprised at any unexpected expectations of New York, Mafia wise or other? In the other category I am talking about expecting neighborhoods to have a certain demographic and being totally different?

Well I’ve been walking around with Bensonhurst all morning enjoying the sites, getting coffee, etc. And YES, the amount of Asians is incredible, they must outnumber the Italians 3:1. I knew Bensonhurst wasn’t what it used to be but it’s still a surprise.

Also had coffee at Caffe Gioiosa just now, similar vibes to Caffe Italia, overheard an interesting conversation with a Sicilian talking (in English) to a native New Yorker about placing bets.
Also, I never realised how close Cafe Gioiosa was to the Banner Social Club. I believe it was felice who mentioned Gioiosa was a mob-spot - anyone know if it’s mob owned or just a hangout because of its proximity to places like the Banner Social Club?

Also, it’s interesting how unwelcoming these places are to newcomers. Especially Gioiosa, there was absolutely nobody at the counter when I got there until about ten minutes, just a bunch of guys chatting in a mix of Italian and English drinking coffee and wine.

Had brunch at the Sunset Diner. From the 2013 bust of Nicholas Santora and his Graham Avenue Crew:
“The Sunset Diner in Greenpoint and the Jackson Hole Diner in Queens were favorite meeting spots, a source said.”
Food was pretty good, great atmosphere.

I’m almost convinced I saw Bonanno soldier Paul Spina but it could’ve been any fat guy with a hooked nose.
I am curious which Jackson hole diner they mean. There are two.

One is in Jackson Heights by LaGuardia. It makes sense that they would meet there because it is a quick few exits up from Greenpoint off the BQE. Also makes sense that they would meet there since Santora had ties to the Romanello Genovese crew, who historically ran Jackson Heights.

The other Jackson hole diner is in Bayside. It's directly across the street from tratoria 35 ristorante, where many bonanno gangsters were taped and photographed recently. So that location makes sense too.
I believe it’s the LaGuardia one because they noted that the diner was used as a filming location in Goodfellas. My notes are at home so don’t quote me on that.

Right on. New Zealand. That's where they made "Lord of the Rings". I say we just move there, yo. I mean, you can do your art. Right? Like, you can paint the local castles and shit. And I can be a bush pilot.

gohnjotti wrote: Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:57 am I’d urge anyone to go to NZ, it really is a beautiful country - warning, spend as little time in Auckland as possible. It’s our largest city and the location of our main international airport and a lot of tourists make the mistake of staying there. No disrespect against Auckland but it’s a stinking shithole full of immigrants from China and India with few redeeming qualities in terms of tourism.

Is New Zealand part of Australia?

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Aurora Cafe (owned by alleged Colombo soldier/associate Phil Fusco and alleged hangout of Gambino capo Louis Vallario and his crew) is permanently closed, as is the Tryst Bar and Lounge.
Also, I know it’s not a mob hangout or anything but Lioni’s Italian Heroes does a BEAUTIFUL sandwich.

Also does anyone know about the Sciacca Social Club near Cafe Italia? Is it connected?

There was an old guy in a red shirt eyeballing me as I walked by, so I waited a bit and walked past with my phone to my ear. I was walking too fast to get a good shot, but I'll return to the scene of the crime for round two.

For now, I'll leave you with the blurry ass footage;

That was basically the extent of my view as well when I was there. Right as soon as I was a block away I saw a bunch of guys congregating outside however.
