What we know about the kid is that he was a conspiracy theorist, a "nutjob", and Frank Cali considered him a deadbeat.

Isn't the obvious answer that - given that he is a conspiracy theorist and was told by Frank to stay away from his niece - that this "nutjob" conspiracy theorist got it in his head that Frank - a known mob boss - was going to kill HIM? I can imagine Comello sitting at home stressing that a team of Sicilians is going to come to his house and off him for messing with Frank's niece. He probably just finished watching Goodfellas, or Casino, or The Sopranos, and got it in his head that - just like Tony Soprano curb-stomping that NY mobster for being a perv to Meadow - the same was going to happen to him. So, after freaking out over every sound he hears on the street, he decides to go to Frank's house and kill him in self-defense?

IMO, if we're dealing with a man known to the police for violent conspiracy theories, that sounds like the most plausible option.
