Mob Books/Films you'd like to see made

Re: Mob Books/Films you'd like to see made
Mob stories tend to be better on screen when they focus more on a particular crew. Philly is small enough that you could cover most of the family and introduce a range of characters Sopranos-style without any problems, though. It's really unfortunate that nobody saw the value in that.
I'd still like to see a movie about the 90's Colombo war.
Unfortunately it's only going to get more difficult to do any worthwhile movies about the older days, as it is only getting more expensive/difficult to recreate costumes and neighborhoods from older eras.
Crazy to think how the two best mob movies are about a fictional crime family that has very little in common with the actual Cosa Nostra (Godfather) and another one about a few associates (Goodfellas).

Same could be said about Casino, exception of Spilotro, managing Vegas was a Jewish affair.B. wrote:Mob stories tend to be better on screen when they focus more on a particular crew. And those are just the ones about "the mafia". Normally when people talk about mob movies they include anything with a "gangster" element, i.e. Scarface.

I think what Scorsese does right is not overdoing it with the Italian guido shit. "This Thing Of Ours" was like drinking apple juice concentrate. The only thing I found mildly entertaining was when there was a "Genovosso Crime Family" meeting one of the captains shows up in a Rolls Royce with "CAPO 01" on his front license, the other captains are staring from the window, throwing their hands up: "Dis fucking guya! Gonna get us all pinched."B. wrote:And those are just the ones about "the mafia". Normally when people talk about mob movies they include anything with a "gangster" element, i.e. Scarface.
It's one of those films like Ghost Dog that had its moments.

I wish someone would do a series about Detroit and the Purple Gang during the 20s/30s (you have prohibition, rampant public corruption, rise of the Italian mob, rise of the labor unions, prominent industry titans like Henry Ford playing both sides of the crime issue, public executions of celebrities like Gerald Buckley). Prob never happen because of Boardwalk Empire.

They should make a musical about Scarfo.
That "I love this. I love it." business would turn into a catchy song pretty easily, as would "Thank god for the American jury system, and an honest jury."

Which I always thought was overrated. When I make my first million I want to try and get a series going on the Ohio River Valley. Early NYC would be good if made accurately (they are making one, I'm sure it will detail Luciano informing a bunch of idiots how to form an American Mafia). As for Detroit, I used to live there so I'd find that interesting also. So many different components. I however don't believe in all these separate Mafia gangs that allegedly came together in 1931 because most of those players were under Giannola in the 10's. I respect Scott Burnstein but I cringe everytime he refers to Zerilli (or was it Bill Tocco?) as Detroit's Founding Don (I cringe Don as a title of boss too but whatever). He (or he) was around during 1931, that's it. If it wasn't him it would have been somebody else. But he didn't found shit. the story isn't they founded Detroit's LCN chapter, the story is they came to power and built on that. Most of their sons went to MSU. They are part of an era rather than a static ideal of Detroit. Giacalone is now the boss but most of his relatives in the next gen are legitimate. The Toccos remain more involved at the descendant level.jimmyb wrote:I wish someone would do a series about Detroit and the Purple Gang during the 20s/30s (you have prohibition, rampant public corruption, rise of the Italian mob, rise of the labor unions, prominent industry titans like Henry Ford playing both sides of the crime issue, public executions of celebrities like Gerald Buckley). Does that really happen in the movie? Haha. I never saw "This Thing of Ours", but those B-movies that piggybacked on the Sopranos never looked appealing to me anyway.Chris Christie wrote:I think what Scorsese does right is not overdoing it with the Italian guido shit. Oh man, you're really onto something here. Featuring such tunes as "I wish I could bring him back to life so I could kill him again", "Maria, I don't love you", "The Ballad of Frankie Flowers", and "The Song a Crow Sings".Ivan wrote:They should make a musical about Scarfo.

A movie about the life of Nick Rizzuto Sr or both Nick sr and Vito. It would be good. A pretty interesting cast of characters and a fitting end for a gangster well into old age. Within then film they can include Vitos death from cancer after getting revenged for his father and son. Also Nicks yrs in south america etc.

Gangster Wars was an 80's film, part of a longer condensed series. It was more accurate than Mobsters. Lansky was another film with Eric Roberts I want to say.Pete wrote:Still don't know why they didn't do a real movie about lucky bugsy and lansky in the 20's and 30's besides that christian slater BS

Yeah I remember thinknig Gangter Wars was good when I first saw it back when I was first getting into the mob. The guy who played Clemenza was Joe Maserria and Robert Davi was Vito Genovese. They even had to change Lansky's name in the movie because Meyer Lansky was still alive. I wish I can remember more of it. Too bad it has never ben released on DVD.
