Yes he “ratted” out the DEA Agent
Masecchia, 56, of Williamsville, was one of several local men targeted in an ongoing federal investigation into suspected organized crime activities. He told law enforcement officials that he and others in the drug trade had help from a federal agent, co-defendant Joseph Bongiovanni, according to his plea agreement. He said Bongiovanni helped him and other drug traffickers avoid arrest by providing “law enforcement-sensitive information,” including the names of potential cooperating witnesses.

The U.S. Attorney's Office agreed to a reduced sentence for Masecchia because "he acknowledged that fact publicly," Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph M. Tripi said at the sentencing hearing.
But he likely did this to keep his criminal/mafia side from being exposed:
If the case had gone to trial, his "criminal side" seen by drug dealers would have been publicly exposed, Tripi said.
Yes Sinatra was the sentencing judge, but I need to correct my post on Michael Sinatra… The Michael Sinatra listed in court papers in the Gerace/Bongiovanni trial is not John Sinatra’s brother the chef. It is a cousin. The Buffalo News writes:
Bogart, 28, owns Bogart Landscape Contracting and a concrete business, in Getzville. Sinatra, 32, also owns a landscape company in Tonawanda. He is a cousin of developer Nick Sinatra.

(Nick is John and Michael’s brother.) I may have been wrong about Chef Michael, but I still believe the whole family is knee deep in all this stuff.

The article doesn't say but do you happen to know if he's going to cooperate in future trials of Bongiovanni and others charged with the drug trafficking? Or was his deal just to admit to paying Bongiovanni for protection?

Don't know... wish I did. My guess is he is probably not. I should also note that the article doesn't claim Masecchia admitted to paying Bongiovanni for protection but that "Bongiovanni helped him and other drug traffickers avoid arrest." Along those lines, the US Attorney for WDNY wrote:
As part of his plea agreement, Masecchia admitted that he received sensitive law enforcement information from his co-defendant Joseph Bongiovanni, who worked as a Special Agent of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration in Buffalo. The information included the names of potential cooperators and whether or not Masecchia and others were under federal investigation, and such information helped Masecchia and others to continue selling marijuana undetected by other members of law enforcement.

I meant protection from arrest, ie. information. It seems weird they'd have Masecchia admit to paying Bongiovanni but unless he testifies, it's basically useless for the government's case. Unless I'm missing something.

Yeah, I just meant it was interesting that his plea doesn’t admit he paid or bribed Bongiovanni, just that he received help/information/protection…
