Historical Bosses of Palermo Province

Post by Antiliar »

Hey everyone, I would like - with your help - to come up with a list of bosses, underbosses and consiglieri of Sicily, province by province. Since we have more information for the province of Palermo it would be good to start there, then we can work on the provinces of Trapani and Agrigento. Please help with missing names and dates, or if anything is incorrect. When this is complete it can be moved to the Mafia Charts section.

There is a 1984 article in Italian from the archive of the "La Repubblica" newspaper, which lists some members of the mafia hierarchy in the Palermo province. I can help with the translation if you want:

https://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblic ... iglie.html

Also, years ago I started a topic where I posted screenshots of a 1990 list of known mafia members; even though some information is outdated or later proven to be incorrect, but I hope it still can be useful somehow. Here is the link to the topic:

I read that in Belmonte Mezzagno, the boss was Salvatore La Rosa, who was also the local mayor; he was killed in 1992 on orders of the mafioso Pietro Lo Bianco and succeeded by Benedetto Spera (whose brother Giovanni was killed together with La Rosa). Lo Bianco was later killed by Spera who was arrested in 2001. Then there was also Rosario Casella's group backed by Francesco Pastoia, who challenged Spera, but I don't know if they were even official bosses of the Belmonte Mezzagno mandamento; the information I read is somehow confusing, I mostly got it from articles in the archives of the newspapers "La Repubblica", "La Stampa" and "L'Unita'".

You are welcome; but unfortunately, I don't really know where exactly did the list originate from, I just once happened to find it online by chance, although that site went down later. I got it again by by ordering a copy from a library in Cremona; there is the title of the newspaper "Epoca" on the cover sheet on the first screenshot, and Pietro Calderoni is listed as the editor. On the 2nd screenshot with the introduction it says it comes from a 1990 Carabinieri report.

Glad you obtained this list and the article. Do you have or have you read Tenebroso Sodalizio by Salvatore Lupo or Relazioni Mafiose by Vittorio Coco? Those are my primary sources for the earlier years.

I have "Relazioni mafiose", but haven't yet read "Tenebroso Sodalizio"; by the way, about that historical period, I also have the book "La mafia dimenticata" ("Forgotten mafia") by Umberto Santino, it covers the history of the mafia from 1861 to the first 1900s, and also "La mafia alla sbarra" by Manoela Patti, which focuses specifically on the mafia trials in the Palermo province during Fascism. I really recommend these books, lots of interesting information.

Haven't been able to obtain a copy of "La mafia dimenticata" here in the U.S. Anything new in it that we didn't previously know?

I thought that Salvatore Lo Piccolo was the boss of Tommaso Natale with his son Sandro as underboss. This would make him boss of the San Lorenzo mandamento not family.

I am not 100% sure, because I haven't read much about the mafia from the 19th century, apart from this book, so I can't really compare it to other sources; however the book is quite detailed with the descriptions, and also contains a series of reports by Ermanno Sangiorgi from 1898 to 1900; not sure if it's the same one mentioned in the description of "Tenebroso sodalizio" though...

A lot of familiar names on there. I know a lot are just coincidence as some of those are common Italian names but no doubt a few connections. One of the only mobsters to operate in Sacramento was a Trifiro. Not sure of his Sicilian lineage. There isn't much info about him.
Glick told author Nicholas Pileggi that he expected to meet a banker-type individual, but instead, he found Alvin Baron to be a gruff, tough-talking cigar-chomping Teamster who greeted him with, “What the fuck do you want?”
