Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

As an Australian and a Melbournite I can confidently say 5000 members is an absolutely ridiculous estimate. Couple of hundred tops. Wouldn’t even be 1000 when you include all associates at any one time. There are around 4000 bikie gang members including all clubs at the present time. They are the l...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

Hey look, that’s just me and what I took it to mean. I’ve read what the AFP have released in statements, and what newscorp carries. I took the number to refer to an estimate of the extended networks, including the distributors. To be fair, it wouldn’t be the first time researchers were caught off gu...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

5000 active members is a relatively accurate estimate in my opinion. Certainly not as inducted ‘ndrina, but as the network of associates around them that help facilitate the drug trafficking. I don’t think anyones claiming there’s 5000 actual ‘ndrine across the several groups operating in this count...

Re: Frank Salemme

I was reading an article about a meeting Salemme had with Gambino capo Natale Richichi in '91, a meeting the FBI happened to be listening to in the hotel room beside...my question is, is it at all odd the Gambinos were recognizing Frank as boss when he's only half Italian? Might be a dumb question ...

Re: Frank Salemme

Check out Double Deal podcast, they do a lot of episodes on Frank Salemme and he is mentioned several times in other episodes as they describe and analysis Nee England crime in the 60s,70s and 80s in that area. One of the women is the daughter of Richard Chicovfsky, a mob associate bank robber from...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

Recentish article talking about how entrenched the Calabrese are in Australia. I’ve read estimates of 5000 active members, which is pretty on the mark considering a total population of nearly 26 million. Anyway, formatted the best I could. How 'Ndrangheta mafia families may be living next to you, qu...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

Okay, sorry for the late reply. In the early ‘90s three Australian journalists pooled their efforts and wrote a book called The Winchester Scandal, which is long out of print. In it, they detail the arrival of the Commisso brothers and the informant Joe Verduci is featured heavily; his statements ma...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

Just fwiw, the alleged Calabrian hit men they refer to as “The shepherds” in these articles I believe to be Giovanni and Domenico Commisso, who arrived at the same time the hitmen are alleged to. Also, the informant I mentioned, Joe Verduci, has his name supressed in recent court hearings as Mr X. I...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

The informant mention in the above articles was a guy named Joe Verduci, who was a Canberra based businessman who had links to some of the state’s ‘ndranghisti around the time in question. What’s interesting is that he approached the AFP of his own accord, identified the essential underboss of Canbe...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

After 30 years, people are still questioning the case of Colon Winchester, but apparently the AFP aren’t concerned. The assassination of Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester remains unsolved despite calls to reopen the case. The 1989 assassination of top cop Colin Winchester remains one of Austra...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

As far as I know, there's apparently some family links, but he's sort of in the same boat as Mick Gatto, or ,maybe Eris Censori and his father. So while they are Italian and have definite links to certain 'ndrine and on occasion share business interests, they are not a part of the organization. ngl,...

Re: Mafia Down Under Discussion

I know a lot of this stuff is behind a pay-wall, but because of the research I do, I have access to all NewsCorp publications. This is from January, and while it’s a good article, it really only skims the surface of the Australian ‘ndrina. I haven’t formatted the article, and apologies if it’s been ...
