Great questions, I hope they all get answered

Gambinos 1983-1985 questions

1) Would it be fair to say that with Paul Castellano under indictment; Neil Dellacroce’s very poor health; and the indictments the family were under in general, that the Gambinos in 1984 to 1985 were in a state of confusion and disarray internally, such as who runs what, what is what?

2) In Aniello Dellacroce’s FBI file in June 1985, an overview of Neil states he is the Street Boss of the Gambinos. In a 1984 report on Joe N. Gallo from his file, it says Gallo is the Acting Boss for the Gambinos. Which is more likely?

3) A report from September 1983 states that Paul Castellano has largely removed himself from day to day operations of the Family, instead focusing on larger issues and the Gambinos’ relationships with other Families. This is in Joe Gallo’s file. The report continues on to state that the present idea is for Neil Dellacroce to eventually take on Paul’s duties when he fully retires; and in turn for Gotti to assume Neil’s duties.

A report from October 1980 states that Neil is taking a more active hand in the family and many members are going to him for disputes.

An April 1981 report from Neil’s file states he turned down formal leadership of the family due to ill health*.

A June 1982 report says that contrary to most LE thinking, Neil is Boss with Paul as Underboss.

A report from the same period states that Neil is leading the Family’s expansion into AC with Gotti being the main man on that; and that John Gotti is used by Neil as an emissary to other Captains. A report from November 1982 states that contact between Paul Castellano and Neil Dellacroce is maintained through John Gotti.

My question with regard to the above is as follows:

Who was more likely to be Gambino Acting Boss circa 1983-1985? Neil Dellacroce, or Joe N. Gallo?

What do you make of the September 1983 transition of leadership report? Note, this was before Neil was diagnosed with cancer, and the Angelo tapes saga had yet to begin.

Are there any other reports that Castellano was winding down his day to day involvement circa 1982-1983?

And, what do you make of the above 1980-1982 reports of Neil as a growing power day to day within the Gambinos - valid, or bullshit?

*Neil was a very sickly man before his diagnosis with cancer in 1984. Per his doctor, he had severe cardiovascular disease which had caused “several strokes” and also diabetes and very poor circulation that led to dizzy spells and numbness of feet.

Remember in the LaForte issue (June 85), Caiazza thought he could go behind Dellacroce’s back and appoint Buddy Acting Capo, and Buddy called Neil senile. Paul gently said to Neil that he (Neil) had his “good and bad days.”
