Some people who go to prison once will do anything to avoid to going back though. I've heard of parolees commiting suicide by cop just to avoid being sent back. Not everyone who serves a prison sentence is tough enough to handle doing it again.
I agree entirely, some of the most hardened, and cold blooded of criminals would rather die than go back to prison a second time. That’s why I say, I don’t understand why time in prison is an indicator as a qualification for being made. Not to mention that not only would some hardcore criminals rather die than go back, depending on the time they’re facing for their second bid in prison - will flip and snitching quicker than they would commit suicide to avoid going back.
If I was a mafia boss of some kind, I would rather make a man who can get the job done, have no problem doing that job, and have the knowledge and skills to avoid ever being caught. Chances are these are high crimes, and the man is going to either go out in glory or sink the entire empire with him - why take that chance? Repeatedly going through the revolving door just has “sloppiness” written all over, and in an organization especially a criminal organization there is no room for sloppiness.
