Growing up in the neighborhood of Winter Hill, Somerville, there were only two things ( Outside of Family) during the 60's, 70's, and 80's certain street guys, and even their wives in most cases, came to worry about:
1a.) Their Reputations on the street.
1b.) Said Reputation being known for the inevitable visit inside
In the Feds, for instance, if a guy claims Boston and its surrounding area once inside, he must provide his papers, usually within a few days, if requested. The paperwork provides confirmation of a few key things: The exact reason said inmate is in, That he didn't provide information (Testify, etc) against anyone, who did in the particular case (if anyone), and that he is from where he says he is.
These pieces of paper work well to find out about present day, but what they don't do is present someone's past dealings with the government, when applicable.
This great unknown about the past came to fruition at Fort Dix Minimum back in late 09'- early 2010. It would end up causing some headaches and tension between made guys from two different families. Who had a pretty healthy relationship and line of communication for the 21st century.
It was 09' and one of the last major OC cases (Previous to Whitey capture) to take it all the way to the jury just ended in a conviction of Arthur Gianelli and crew. People outside of the area might not know that he was really big. Had his hands in everything and was One of the first guys in the area to go almost 100% offshore/Online. (Spitzy Gambale was another) AG's Book was worth Millions, his Machines were everywhere, owned legitimate businesses, etc. He also paid the rent to everybody who attempted to shake him down, because it was nothing to him, as long as business wasnt interrupted. We all know the 2k that was in the papers that went to Carmen. He ends up sentenced to 25 yrs or so.
During beginning 2010 Carmen D. is down in NJ, and he gets word that Arthur might also be coming to Dix. CD had a good rep with the guys inside, and he begins to kinda pave the way by letting them know a solid guy who just took 25 yrs on the chin etc. And most important he is with CD.
No one really pays too much mind and dont think twice about a newbie being processed in. It wasn't until a made guy high up in the Gambino's, who spoke with Carmen often keeps asking about Arthur and can't put his finger on why the name is so familiar. For a week this goes on, when finally a light dawns over Marblehead, and the Gambino Member confronts Carmen over the reason why he knows the name;
Back in the 80's, Arthur testified in front of federal grand jury out of NYC, which ended up with indictment and conviction of some NY guys. I think they got some decent time. CD won't believe it and defends the guy who took the time after verdict, never a word. He keeps with this tone, while going around backing Arthur. (Gambino members put the word out to tread litely in future discussions or opportunities that may present themselves between the families.) (Gambino visit to Boston that same year.) This is until the Gambino Member pulls him aside and tells him he has the papers to prove he ratted on some members back then. One of the guys in the 80s case was also at Fort Dix in 2010. I forgot the specifics of who he was, but the Gambino higher up who recognized Arthur's name at the start was Joseph Corozzo. He held enough sway that the issue was dropped. Although CD's ego was hurt, he realized the only reason Arthur didnt rat was there was noone to rat on. He was at the Peak of his kingdom and other than a periodic envelope, he never had the goods he might've held when Connolly was out and about. I truly believe that. He was a cash cow for a lot of people on the street and he knew it. Why would he need to write down the tax he paid monthly to the UB of New England, unless if needed he could use that as evidence he was being threatened etc to get leniency. Too bad that never came into play except for Howie Carr amd Mike Beaudet journalistic pieces of art Pulitzer worthy reporting. You never know someone 100% so Vouching to me is taking a huge chance in the outside world... Let alone in the can!
Take care,
Luca
