Son of Andrew Russo, acting boss of the Colombo crime family. Brother of Joseph 'JoJo' Russo, capo in the Colombo crime family in the 1980s and 1990s until his arrest, life sentence, and death in 2007.
In Andrew Russo's 1984 indictment, Billy was "named" in court papers as being involved in a cruise ship casino skimming operation with his father Andrew, then a Colombo capo. I put "named" in brackets because it was reported that Andrew was involved in the operation with his "sons" - plural - and I believe Andrew only had two sons, Joseph 'JoJo' and William 'Billy.'
William Russo attended a January 18, 1996 meeting with Colombo mobsters Andrew Russo and Thomas Gioeli, and Philadelphia mobsters Ralph Natale, Steve Mazzone and Tyrone DeNitis on 506 President St., Brooklyn.
On February 12, 1996, John Franzese was arrested and charged with violating parole, namely by meeting with Billy Russo and Louis Fenza.
William Russo attended a Sep. 30, 2010 meeting at a Franklin Sq., Long Island restaurant that the Russo family controlled. At the meeting were Andrew Russo, Paul Bevacqua, Anthony Russo, Andre D'Apice, and Carmine L. Persico.
Following the 2011 busts, the NY Post named William Russo as being a potential successor to his father.
By Oct. 2011, Billy Russo was under investigation by federal prosecutors Elizabeth Geddes and Allon Lifshitz due to his taking place in various tape-recorded meetings with Paul Bevacqua.
