Here is an old Mob Talk about the Gongs hit. On location of the hit. Looks like Casasanto was involved in quite a few different altercations in public.

He might have thought he would be killed if he ever got out of prison. There has to be more to the story that Merlino and crew just stopped sending him payments out of the blue.

I'm sure sure there were multiple reasons. To quote Nicky Santoro, "I mean, this guy's just beggin' to be made an example of."
Damn, just one of those would've gotten you killed under Scarfo.

Natale definitely seems like a bullshitter when it comes to his reason for ratting, like Casso. All this, 'I saw the light', and 'there were no more men of honour' nonsense. They bring that up in the same interviews where they say that being a gangster is the best thing in the world. One thing I respected Ron Previte for was he never did that. He was honest. He co-operated because he wanted to stay out of jail and because he was greedy for the money the federal government was giving him. There's nothing else too it.

Yes, I think he would have.
He spent most of his adult life
in prison. Enough is enough.
Too easy to rat and walk nowadays.
Not like the other times he got
busted. Back then, the mob might
retaliate if you were found in hiding.

He allegedly took credit for it. Highly unlikely he took part in it. And yeah Nicodemo is a prime suspect in his murder.

He was also supposedly involved with Alite and associated with New York in prison and tried to get transferred. Pogo is right on, plenty of reasons that guy got killed. I'd love to see them try to indict for that one, just to see Eddie Jacobs take apart each different equally plausible explanation for the hit.

Sometime between Summer 1998-Spring 2000.

dack2001 wrote: Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:00 am I think there was full recognition sometime in mid-2000's of Joey and his group, Scarfo Jr. demotion, skins/Gambino dinner with Ligambi and crew over Jr and his guys belonging to Philly and Joey clearly being recognized across the board by 2015 given the company he kept in Florida and during the new york indictment....all signs that point to one conclusion.
That timeline makes the most sense.

I've been curious about John Gambino's comment to Stefanelli where the two were praising Ligambi, but Gambino said he couldn't help him. From limited context, it almost sounds like he wanted to help him but couldn't, possibly out of protocol, but it's also possible/likely Gambino didn't want to get in the middle of Philly's problem with the Luccheses for practical reasons.

Still hoping we hear someday about what Philly's beef with the DeCavs was, as they brought that to the Gambinos at the same meeting.

The Luccheses may have recognized Merlino/Ligambi prior to 2010. When the Pernas were recorded talking about Nicky Jr's demotion they mention how Scarfo Sr "should still be the boss", so it could be that the Luccheses recognition of Philly coincided with Scarfo Jr being bumped down. Or this comment could also point to the Luccheses still being the only NY family to recognize Scarfo Sr as boss at this time (around 2007).
