Years ago, they didn't bother with anything, as surveillance wasn't what it is today. Just put the key in the door at night and go home.
Later, some guys started putting rolling metal fencing or gates on places, as it makes a shit load of noise and is virtually impassable to a crackhead snatch and grab guy looking for a few bucks.
We had a place in the Bronx that was shuttered up with gates tighter than a mouse's ass and heard the NYPD Vice guys were coming and hitting places, so we hurriedly closed the place, pulled the gates down, then stood around on the corner. The cops roll up and see the gates, and don't even bother getting out of the cars, so we think all is well and we start to chuckle. Within 20 minutes ESU rolls up with a welding truck and cables. The Lieutenant comes over to us and says, "Look, we have a warrant, so either open the place up, or we're gonna pull the gates off with the welders and cables". We reluctantly complied since we didn't want to lose a couple grand worth of gating. They poked around for a while, took the machines, arrested the guy behind the counter and were gone.
In the end, if the FEDS want to get into a place, they're gonna get in.
