they are separate groups
in the past there were only a cosa nostra family in catania founded in the 1920s by luigi saitta, in the 1960s the boss was giuseppe calderone, replaced later by nitto santapaola, who is still the official boss
in the 1990s other families had been affiliated with cosa nostra (mazzei, cappello-pillera, laudani)
aside the groups based in catania city (but with factions all across the province) there are also 2 cosa nostra families based in the towns of caltagirone (la rocca) and ramacca (conti)

santapaola-ercolano, cappello-pillera, laudani, mazzei, la rocca are all cosa nostra
the cappello-pillera's answer to palermo (san lorenzo mandamento), not catania
Are these all separate groups or seperate factions of one family in Catania?

While I know absolutely zero about the current state of affairs in Catania I have read the book 'Men of Dishonor' that contains a great deal of info about the Catania family. Highly recommended.

Can anyone break down to me the actual setup of Catania? I know about the Santapaola-Ercolano group as part of Cosa Nostra, or is the actual Cosa Nostra cosca within the city. Then, I read about La Rocca of Caltagirone, Laudani, Pulvirenti, Cappello-Bonaccorsi, Cursoti, Mazei, Pillera-Puntina...what are all these groups and what are their affiliations? Are all of these Cosa Nostra?
