Look at the current state of the music biz. As .B pointed out, you can record a passable record using a simple mic, and a laptap. Add in a few programs and a couple of effects, and you can literally make a hit record sitting at your computer. Money isn't made through album sales, therefore labels have little incentive to back an artist like they once did. In case you haven't noticed, take Hip-Hop for example, the only artists who get real label support are the independent artists who decided to sign a major contract with a major record company, the labels back them because they already had a fanbase prior to the big label coming along. Labels can make a lot more money off the touring , hit singles, radio play, itunes (and others like it) purchases, etc from those types of artists. I can't see any wiseguy, wanting to even deal with record labels these days. The market simply isn't the same. I think there is absolutely zero involvement or connections between the mafia & music industry. The only "gangsters" getting involved and sometimes profitting from the music biz, are the dealers who start up their own independent labels using drug money and recruiting artists and talent from within their neighborhoods and elsewhere.
