His Five families book was one of the first mafia books I’ve ever read when I was in my teens. I still flip through it. RIP
I bought The Westies and Goombata on the same day at a Waldenbooks only a couple months after they both came out, they were my firsts.
But Five families and the first Carl Sifakis Mafia Encyclopedia were the jewels of my mob book collection early on.
RIP S. Raab
Man that's some nostalgia right there. Going to Waldenbooks at the mall and making a beeline for the True Crime section, that was me as a teenager 30 years ago.
Those old "mafia encyclopedias" were fun. I like the one that lists every mob killer as having done like 50~100 hits.
