Yep, Accardo and Ricca stepping up as acting bosses together while serving on the consiglio is comparable too to San Jose, where an informant reported that consiglio members Stefano Zoccoli (chairman) and Filippo Morici served as dual acting bosses in Joe Cerrito's absence.

An early example is Giuseppe Traina of the Gambinos. DiLeonardo was told by Jerry D'Aquila that Traina had been Toto D'Aquila's consigliere and we know from Gentile that Traina was also D'Aquila's sostituto / acting boss.

Frank Costello is another apparent example. Bill Bonanno identified him as Luciano's consigliere and he was the longtime acting boss before taking the official seat.

This makes perfect sense to me now because I long suspected in Rockford that Phil Caltagerone was the early consigliere- this is reinforced by Augie Maniaci's info that while boss Tony Musso was in Leavenworth from 1931-1932, Caltagerone was named Acting Boss.
Again in May 1981 when longtime consigliere Joe Zito was ailing and a month away from dying, the FBI believed Charles Vince was named acting boss while Boss Joe Zammuto was vacationing in Florida for a few months. Vince was reputed to be the consigliere after the death of Zito. With Rockford being a traditional LCN family, this fits perfectly.
Great info.

There are other examples of this, too, and with Rockford being very Sicilian and traditional it makes sense they followed it.

As Scootch said, the Anastasia murder wasn't Carlo Gambino's plot, but a plot by the Biondo-Riccobono faction. We can be almost certain Gambino backed them and it appears Domenico Arcuri did as well. I would assume a number of the old line Sicilian capidecine supported the plot, whether before it happened or after.

Gambino didn't takeover like Gotti did. Biondo, Riccobono and Dongarra were the guys who had Anastasia killed. Gambino becomes the Commission appointed Acting Boss because he was the Consigliere at the time. Rava gets murdered and eventually Carlo becomes the official Boss.

I'm pretty sure that's the jist of it there are definitely several threads that go into this in detail that you can search for.

Was Gambinos takeover similar to Gottis where after killing Anastasia he was the obvious next successor???

Rava/Dellacroce had a huge crew and was very powerful at this time what made them let Gambino take over??

What captains were also involved in the family takeover? Piney Armone , Joe Gallo ??

There's not much on Gambino's pre boss days
