Nice pics. Don’t believe I’ve seen that one of La Balestea before.
Yeah, Veteto was a rough dude. He pled guilty in 1985 in IL to extortion and assault charges for roughing a guy up while collecting on a juice loan. He was sentenced to three years probation and then skipped town and bounced around between Detroit and Alabama. In 1987, the FBI contacted him in AL and told him that he was going to be called to testify back in Cook County for a murder trial. At that point, Veteto then broke contact with LE and a warrant was issued for his arrest for violating his parole. As Snakes noted, he was later apprehended in Vermont for assaulting his mother and setting her on fire. All told, he wound up getting a sentence of ten years in the Feds but was released in 1995 from Federal custody, at which point I believe that he moved to KY where he died in 2014.
Steven Veteto was born in 1947, but I’m not sure where he was born. Despite the appearance, the surname is not Italian. Veteto/Vittitoe is actually a “hillbilly” surname from KY/TN of distant German origin. I’m pretty sure that he was not born in Chicago; he could have been born in KY. I can’t say for sure that he wasn’t originally from somewhere in Western NY state, though his mom at one point at least was living in Vermont. Over the years, Steven Veteto lived in IL, KY, LA, AL, OH, MI, and VT, but never seen anything tying him to NY state (there are some Vetetos from KY who migrated to Buffalo before WW2, however, though there are also people from Appalachia with this surname who wound up all over the country as part of the 20th century migration out of the rural South).
