Wow this was phenomenal!
Abate’s family being from Vita and being related Onofrio Abate/Pizzolato family/Toto Minore is pretty huge.
There was an Abate family (also from Vita) in South Jersey; they had intermarried with Newark underboss Sam Monaco’s family. I had previously wondered if they were related to Onofrio but now Joe seems like a likely connection. Either ways it’s no longer a mystery as to why he wound up in NJ
It’s wild how rigid the Lucchese NJ crew was in terms of protocol. Both Abate & Pizzolato crashing out because Accetturo complemented him is especially crazy because he was already a top associate at that point. Another interesting aspect is that they don’t seem to have made anyone until the ‘70s
It makes sense that Abate and Charles Matranga would have been in contact. He was involved in the South Jersey area for a very long time. As for his BIL, who was supposed to be a front for Joe Bonanno, it would have been Jack LoPiccolo rather than Joseph LoPiccolo.
