It certainly makes sense that a guy with that last name, from the neighborhood we are talking about, who is involved in video poker, was connected. It’s more plausible than him being independent. I’m just surprised this was never discussed before, because it directly backs up the idea that those two crews were going head to head on the video poker thing. If Dublino was backed by Melrose Park, it makes sense that he would feel OK telling Sarno to fuck off in 2002.
You have to wonder if a guy like this is still active today and fell in line with the Cicero/Cautadella crew that runs that part of the city now
casey szflarski (daughter is married to frank carusos jr./wife is the daughter of shorty lamantia) had machines in the location where sarno ordered dublino to stay away from. he was the owner of amusments inc. in berwyn and took over the stops from m&m amusements in berwyn from james and mickey marcello after family secrets.
a bar owner from lyons testifed he had machines from szaflarski in his business for years, but then switched to dublino for a better deal. if dublino was the driver of zizzo, its possible they beefed over routes.
There certainly seemed to be a lot of tension about the video poker thing at that time. Common sense tells us it must’ve been quite lucrative.
I had a personal social family connection to the Szaflarski deal. He was a very blatant front for the Carusos/26th St. The Polack took the fall and the Italians didn’t get touched.
It came out in that investigation that he mentioned Toots by name on a phone call with Sarno and was pretty severely reprimanded.
I believe it.
Granted this was 2010-11, but anyone who doesn’t Understand how the outfit could possibly exist in this century needs to spend a weekend in Bridgeport around some of those families(Carusos/Szaflarskis/LaMantias/LaPietras, etc). It’s insanely insular and tight knit. There is more than enough there to facilitate a mob crew . Same with the Elmwood Park/Melrose Park area. I can’t speak to the grand Avenue or Cicero areas, but I’ve seen that culture with my own eyes in those other two spots. It’s small, but it’s still alive.
