That chronology makes sense. Well, then, that's a good find HK.

I can see Catena being made a crew boss by Costello after Moretti was killed in 1951, but it doesn't make sense that Catena was appointed a boss by Costello when Costello already lost his power, having been demoted to nothing. It just doesn't fit with the chronology.
My thinking is that Costello made Catena acting boss in 1956, when he was still the boss. In 1956, Costello was sentenced to 5 years for tax evasion. It was after the murder attempt on him in May 1957, that Costello was demoted and Genovese took power. So if this is correct, Catena was made captain in 1951, acting boss in 1956, underboss in 1957.

Unless they went to Costello following Genovese's incarceration and Costello "suggested" Catena as a candidate. He was out of power but probably retained some measure of influence/pull.

I'm surprised that Alo would be an acting boss when Genovese was available. I could see Genovese as acting boss and Alo as acting underboss.

Looking at other files it's possible that Alo taking over was an unfounded underworld rumor:

Yeah, looks like Alo was never selected Costello´s replacement. Carmine Bove, Fred "Poggiarelli" (clearly a reference to Fred "Poggi" Toriello and a "rackateer" named "Malindri" (Mike Miranda?) were all under consideration. I´m surprised Vito Genovese was not mentioned.

Found this, which may be more closer to the truth:

Later period? Do you mean in the 1950s? Moretti was dead by then. Costello had legal troubles periodically from appr 1952 til he was shot in 1957. Did time in between 1952 and 1953. And again in 1956. Jimmy Alo was acting boss in 1956.

I believe what the informant meant by "Eastern Syndicate" is actually the Genovese Family. I have no record of who was acting boss in 1952 and 1953.

Costello became the official boss when he met with Luciano in Cuba in late 1946, shortly before Lucky was deported to Italy.

Yes, Valachi got his dates wrong.

I posted this elsewhere, so I thought it would be good here too:

1931:
Boss: Lucky Luciano
Underboss: Vito Genovese
Consigliere: Saverio Pollaccia (k. 1932)

1932:
B: Luciano
U: Genovese
C: Frank Costello

1936-1945:
B: Luciano
Acting boss: Costello [Joe Valachi says "Chee Gusae" and Willie Moretti were briefly acting bosses around 1936 or so]
U: Genovese
Acting underboss: Willie Moretti
C: Costello
Acting consigliere: Alessandro "Sandino" Pandolfo

1947-1948:
B: Costello
U: Genovese
C: Pandolfo (died in 1948)

1948-1957:
B: Costello
U: Genovese
C: unknown [Michele Miranda was the next known consigliere, but we don't know when he was promoted to this position; we know he was the consigliere under Genovese]

1957-1969:
B: Genovese
U: Gerry Catena
C: Miranda

They were brothers.

Strollo: should be in the chart for Eboli, his successor.
Pellegrino: several names like Rosario Mogavero, but I don't know who was part of it in 1931.
Wasn't Giuseppe Piraino/Peraino believed to be part of the Yale crew? I believe Vincenzo "Jimmy Dimino" Generoso was associated with Yale and Cafarno as well back then.
Yes, I forgot about him, but it could be another case of guilt by association. Based on guilty by association Frank Costello and Albert Anastasia would have been in the same crew.

Also, since Peraino's kids were Colombos I have to wonder if he was really under Mineo/DiBella/Profaci.

Maybe Generoso was part of the Yale/Carfano crew then got his own. Don't have much documentation on him.
