Sociologically, a lot. But first, are you defining gangster as only Italian? If so, then no need to proceed. Most gangsters, from the Mexican, to the Vice Lords, are not reared in a traditional (2-parent home) working class family and very often don't graduate high school - or don't excel. An analysis focusing on the likelihood of crime and demographics (Sociology), of which there are many, bare this out. Citing someone from a solid family and with a certificate of graduation is not impossible; it's also not impossible to cite all the posers (including over-dressed bookmakers).
