They were the true heads of it…

Is this usual for Italian-American OC, or special to this specific crew/faction? Haven't heard of membership fees before, seems a little odd considering the honor being made is..

Specific to this group. Note that the CI wasn't being made into LCN, but rather into the local "Calabrian Organization" that was under Mallamo and Romeo. JCB has spoken about this quite a bit over the years. In 1964, CV 278 and two other CIs were giving info to the FBI about Youngstown and believed the "Calabrian Organization" there to have the following affiliates and to ultimately answer to Tony Milano in Cleveland (and before Tony, to Ciccio Milano):

Thanks for clearing this up. Seems like being made in a Calabrian org. has less privileges than being made into LCN, or this is just a one-off thing with the membership fees and such. Is this always the case or once again, specific to the Romeo-Mallamo group?

The Calabrians were the true power in Youngstown and throughout the entire Ohio River Valley. Everybody danced to the their tune.

Curious about this too, who exactly was the informant that got made during this ceremony?
I’m not aware that anyone has figured out who the CI was. He was given the code “CV 278-CTE” (“criminal top echelon” informant). Maybe JCB has an idea of who he was, as I have no idea what CIs the Feds may developed in Youngstown in the 60s. The CI was also referenced in other reports as having attended meetings with Mallamo and others at the Workingmen’s Club in 1964.

No, Rick, the duplicate post was genuinely my fault because I somehow pressed the Back button to edit the original instead of clicking on the edit button — my apologies to you and the board.
I wasn't referring to your post, but to the porn spam posts. You're fine.

Dammit I read that twice but yeah it was 20 years ago. Thanks for the info, looks like I'll have to reread it (I was an idiot nonstop-binge-drinking college student back then so it's unsurprising I don't remember it... Ohio State was a fun place in 2002 ).

"It's" now banned, but I'm sure he'll keep on trying to cause problems. Anyways, regarding the thread, this was mentioned way back in the early 2000s in David Critchley's book.

1. The 1906 murder of Seely Houk in, possibly, Lawrence County, PA -- his body was found in the Mahoning River -- is discussed in, among other places, Nicola Gratteri's La malpianta: conversazione con Antonio Nicaso and in Quando la 'ndrangheta scoprì l'America. 1880-1956. Da Santo Stefano d'Aspromonte a New York, una storia di affari, crimini e politica, the book Nicaso co-authored with Maria Barillà and Vittorio Amaddeo. Suspicion immediately fell on the Italian population in nearby Hillsville, OH.

In the first book, mention is made of how an employee of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency was able to not only ingratiate himself with members of Mano Nera (the Black Hand) / picciotteria in Ohio but also to get himself initiated. According to the book, the re-creation of the ceremony by the Pinkerton agent apparently matches the ceremony conducted by the 'ndrangheta today.

2. The monthly dues mentioned in the Black Vault document to which Ivan linked is reminiscent of the monthly dues that were brought up by RCMP Insp. Dino Chiarot during the 1982 trial in Hamilton of Antonio Luppino, John Luppino -- both sons of Giacomo -- and Gerry Fumo (possibly related to the Luppinos). These dues are mentioned in 'ndrangheta meetings recorded by the police in Ontario and Quebec.
