1. The 1906 murder of Seely Houk in, possibly, Lawrence County, PA -- his body was found in the Mahoning River -- is discussed in, among other places, Nicola Gratteri's La malpianta: conversazione con Antonio Nicaso and in Quando la 'ndrangheta scoprì l'America. 1880-1956. Da Santo Stefano d'Aspromonte a New York, una storia di affari, crimini e politica, the book Nicaso co-authored with Maria Barillà and Vittorio Amaddeo. Suspicion immediately fell on the Italian population in nearby Hillsville, OH.
In the first book, mention is made of how an employee of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency was able to not only ingratiate himself with members of Mano Nera (the Black Hand) / picciotteria in Ohio but also to get himself initiated. According to the book, the re-creation of the ceremony by the Pinkerton agent apparently matches the ceremony conducted by the 'ndrangheta today.
2. The monthly dues mentioned in the Black Vault document to which Ivan linked is reminiscent of the monthly dues that were brought up by RCMP Insp. Dino Chiarot during the 1982 trial in Hamilton of Antonio Luppino, John Luppino -- both sons of Giacomo -- and Gerry Fumo (possibly related to the Luppinos). These dues are mentioned in 'ndrangheta meetings recorded by the police in Ontario and Quebec.
