Notes for John S. Cancillieri:
Two men murdered at his weddng reception, January 23, 1930. Residence 1215 Liverpool Street.
A double murder took place at their wedding reception. Four hundred invited guests, including Spallino, crowded the Eagles Hall on West Stockton and Sherman Avenues to celebrate the Jan. 22, 1930, union. As the orchestra played "Home Sweet Home" and attendees danced and collected pieces of wedding cake, one uninvited guest, Leo Baretta, crossed the dance floor and fired five shots from a handgun into the back of Salvatore Cirlingione (also known as Joseph Blair). According to authorities the two men had been partners in a North Side cafe and were linked with local bootleg operations. Seconds later, as Baretta attempted to flee, Spallino emptied his handgun into the assassin's head. Police burst into the hall just as Spallino slipped out of a side exit. Detective Flrenz Brunner apprehended the gangster before he reached his automobile. Baretta and Cirlingione were taken to Allegheny General Hospital where they were pronounced dead. As detectives interviewed the hundreds of wedding attendees, they discovered that none of them say anything helpful. Spallino could not be prosecuted.249

NEW TRIAL DENIED IN GAMBLING CASE, The Pittsburgh Press, October 4, 1949
Visiting Judge J. Frank Graff today refused to grant a new trial for John S. Cancillieri, on whose farm in Indiana Twp. County detectives seized 170 slot machines last March. A jury found Cancillieri, alias Cangelier, guilty of being a common gambler two months later. In seeking a new trial, Cancillieri claimed that the slot machines were being dismantled and were not to be used for gambling. Since his conviction, Judge Thomas M. Marshall granted a motion of the District Attorney's office to destroy the slots, valued at between $30,000 and $100,000. A date for sentencing Cancillieri will be set shortly.
SLOT MACHINE APPEAL DENIED, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, October 5, 1949
Visiting Judge J. Frank Graff yesterday rejected the motion for a new trial for John Cancillieri, of 1411 Fulton Street, convicted after 170 slot machines were seized in his barn on Klein road, Indiana township, last March. Cancillieri [Cancelliere] had claimed he had received the machines from the Coin Distributing Company and was going to convert them into "various useful articles." In rejecting the appeal for another trial, Judge Graff ruled "it was a matter for the jury to decide whether these gambling devices were being kept with the purpose of operating them."

The Pennsylvania State Police furnished the Pittsburgh FBI Office a copy of a report dated October 14, 1942, which was written by Detective John Chrin, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), entitled "Mafia Society's Activities in Labor," in which Detective Chrin referred to several prominent Western Pennsylvania racketeers as members of the Black Hand or of the Mafia. No evidence is contained in Chrin's report to the effect that these racketeers are actually Mafia members, but merely refers to them as such. Chrin, in his report, also mentioned the society known as the Villa Rosa, beneficial association organized by Jack Cancelliere, a North Side, Pittsburgh, racketeer, and composed of a group of fellow Sicilians, as an organization of Pennsylvania Handers. Unverified allegations have come to the attention of this office from other sources to the effect that the Villa Rosa Society might be a Black Hand group.
'HOPELESS DEADLOCK' GETS JURY DISMISSED
The Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh, Pa.
December 21, 1944
A "hopelessly deadlocked" Federal jury was dismissed today after 19 ½ hours of deliberation failed to produce a verdict in the case of Giacomo Cancelliere, who was charged with conspiracy to assist in concealing assets of a bankrupt estate. Cancelliere, 56, of 1129 Ridge Ave., and eight others were indicted on a charge of alleging they conspired to conceal assets of $26,000 from the estate of Vincent Parisi. The other indictments were dropped by court order on technical grounds. The jury in the Cancelliere case began its discussion at 2:45 p.m. yesterday, and at 10:15 a.m. today the foreman told Federal Judge F. P. Schoonmaker that there was no possibility of agreement. Government officials were unable to indicate whether a new trial will be sought.
FBI 8/17/67 Subject File: LCN
PG T-4 advised that in the late 1920's and early 1930's, the two top groups in the Mafia in the Pittsburgh area were headed by John Cancellieri (deceased) of the North Side, and the Volpe brothers of Wilmerding, Pittsburgh, Pa., headed by Johnny Volpe (deceased), also known as "Prince Johnny." He stated that Johnny Volpe was shot down in July, 1932, on Wylie Avenue, Pittsburgh, with his brothers, Jimmy and Arthur. Louis Volpe and Joe Volpe are the younger surviving brothers. John Cancellieri died about 1965, and left his Rosa Villa Restaurant at Sandusky and East General Robinson Streets to his grandsons, John and Sam. The father of these two boys, Sam, died in 1947, and was an active Mafia man. The informant was not certain of the sons' affiliation with La Cosa Nostra but knows that meetings are held at the Rosa Villa Restaurant between LaRocca, the Mannarinos, and Tony Ripepi periodically.

He states LaRocca did visit him on at least one occasion that he can recall and that the visit was only a social one during which time no telephone calls were made. He stated he flew to Fla. via jet plane and was accompanied by Charles Fashion, a crippled individual, age 73, from Johnstown, Pa., who is a retired beer salesman. He stated he had no other visitors except LaRocca and was placed in Hollywood, Fla., hospital when he became seriously ? by son, Johnny, age 43, and manager of Rosa Villa Restaurant in PG which was hangout of LaRocca, flew to Fla.. with uncle, Angelo Cancelliere, and drove father's car back to Pg. Because of advanced age and fact that Cancelliere could not talk English, no further info relating to social relationship with LaRocca sought.

Notes for Maria Palilla:
Maria died November 14, 1927, when an Equitable Gas containment tank exploded on the North Side. She was hit by a shard of glass from a nearby window at her home at 1129 Ridge Ave., which severed an artery in her hip or her carotid artery. The "Congoliers" had moved into the house during the 1920s. A photo of her motherless children appeared in The Press on November 16, 1927.
THE DIGS, Nov. 14, 2012, by Steve Mellon
Nov. 17, 1927: Behind this picture lies a tragic story. How that story ends is a mystery, one you may be able to help solve. These five children, dressed in their Sunday clothes, are siblings. Can you see a certain sadness in the eyes? A sense of shock? The picture was published in the Pittsburgh Press under the headline, “Blast leaves five tots motherless.”
Mary Cangelier was washing her family’s laundry when one of the world’s largest gas storage tanks exploded just a few blocks away, on Reedsdale Street on the city’s North Side. Nearby buildings collapsed into heaps of debris; pieces of the steel tank rained down on the city’s streets. The blast shattered thousands of windows, including those in the Cangelier home; one jagged piece of glass cut into Mary’s leg with such force that it severed an artery. The 28-year-old mother bled to death.
The explosion killed 28 people. Most were workers on or near the gas tank and were either blown to pieces or were crushed by falling debris. A few days after the explosion, a Press photographer was summoned to take a picture of Mary’s five children. They are, from left, Lena, 11; John, 9; Angelo, 7; Rose, 4; and Frances, 13.
And what happened to the Cangelier children? We’d like to know. If you have any information about the explosion or the family, please contact us and we’ll share it on the Digs.
*A year ago we posted a photograph of five children left motherless after a deadly explosion on the North Sice in 1927. We knew very little about the children and wondered, "What happened to them?" We asked for your help.
Well, we have learned a few things, from information provided by some of our readers and from our own newspaper files. What emerges is a complex story of a Pittsburgh family that spans more than eight decades.
The picture appeared in the Pittsburgh Press a few days after the explosion of a gas storage tank on Reedsdale Street. The blast killed 28 people, including a young mother, Mary Cancelliere (the name sometimes appears as Congelier, Cangalier of Cangellire). Her children are, from left, Lena, 11; John, 9; Angelo, 7; Rose, 4; and Frances, 1.
Frances "loved people and loved food," wrote the PG's Linda Wilson Fuoco in Frances' obituary in February 2007. Frances married Michael Laquatra and worked nearly her entire adult life at the Rosa Villa restaurant, which her father Giacamo established in 1932. You may remember the Rosa Villa - it was located on General Robinson Boulevard and Sandusky Street on the North Side.
Regular customers were Steelers owner Art Rooney and "Mean" Joe Green. Michael Keaton and Dennis Hopper stopped there when they were in town. The Rosa Villa closed in 2004.
Frances died at age 92 and was survived by a son, two daughters, 11 grandchildren and 88 great-grandchildren.
Lena married Joseph Restivo and was listed along with her brother John as co-owner of the Rosa Villa. She died at age 70 in 1990 and was survived by three daughters, a son and 12 grandchildren.
John died in 1987. He was 69. His obituary listed no children.
Angelo graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943 and served two terms as president of the North Side Lions Club. He died at age 71 in 1992. We discovered little about Rose other than the month and year of her death, January 1981.
In the PG files, we found an envelope of newspaper storeis with headlines like "Numbers Suspect Held for Court" and Tax Liens slapped on Cangeliers." Some members of the Cancelliere family, the stories tell us, were arrested in the late 1940s and charged with operating lotteries. John Cancelliere, uncle of the children, was named in a few of those stories.
For years the Cancellieres remained in the house where Mary died. A number of extended family members joined them there. In fact, one new story about the Cancellieres' tax problems attempted to sort out who was who in the three story brick home at 1129 Ridge Ave.
The writer figures out the first two family members named in a suit, but "the third Cangalier is named only as John, which the Bureau of Internal Revenue may find confusing," the article complains. "There are at least three Johns and the whole family uses the same address..."
Census records from 1930 show that the Cancelliere children lived at that address with their father and uncles John, Sam and Luigi, all barbers, and Charles, a carpenter.
We realize this is but a partial history of a family rocked by one of the city's great tragedies. So much remains untold. We thank the readers who helped us peel a bit of the mystery from a poignant picture buried deep in our files.

CLUB BUYER'S SON PAUPER, HE SAYS
The Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh, Pa.
October 2, 1948
John C. Cancelliere, 31, North Side police character, is not so loaded with greenbacks as his papa, Angelo, a prospective buyer of the Club Society. In fact, John says he's a pauper. He was released from jail yesterday for a hearing Thursday on his refusal to pay $5500 in a damage suit against him. John told Judge Henry X. O'Brien that he was "insolvent" and his stay in the lockup was a "hardship" against himself and family. When not in jail, he runs the Belgrade Bar and Grill at 106 E. General Robinson St., North Side.
Back in 1946, one of his patrons, Denzill Hall, fell down the steps in the saloon and broke his back. He sued for $15,000, claiming the stairway to the men's room was "worn, rotted and rusted and had no lights." The jury awarded him $5500. John refused to pay. So yesterday he was jailed by deputy sheriffs. But he was out on a habeas corpus writ before his cell seat got warm.
It was just one of many brushes with the law for the stocky member of the Cancellieres. There was a killing in the Robinson St. Bistro in 1933 but John, arrested then, was released after an investigation by Detective Dennis Timpona. Timpona was adjudged "unfit" by the recent Grand Jury investigating rackets in Pittsburgh. In 1942, and on frequent other occasions, John was picked up as a numbers racketeer.

BREWERY AT BRACKENRIDGE SCENE OF RAID, Simpson's Leader-Times, Kittanning, Pa., January 25, 1929
Pittsburgh Jan. 24 (UP) - Federal prohibition agents seized the Labor Products and ice Company brewery at Brackenridge early today and confiscated thousands of gallons of "high powered" beer, John D. Pennington, prohibition administrator for the Pittsburgh district announced. Pennington said the action of the dry agents in seizing the brewery was the result of an investigation which revealed that beer of high alcoholic content was being shipped from the plant. Officers of the brewery are Salvatore Cancelliere, president; F. C. Walter, vice president, and Alfred Chalfant, secretary-treasurer, Pennington said.

'NUMBERS FAMILY' SETTLES TAX CLAIMS
The Pittsburgh Press
February 4, 1954
Three members of the Cangelier [Cancelliere] numbers family have been freed of income tax liens by the U.S. Treasury Dept. The department yesterday instructed the office of Prothonotary David B. Roberts to life liens against the three amounting to $83,267.70, indicating the Government's tax claims have been settled.
The liens, filed April 2, 1952, amounted to $25,977.29 for Samuel Cangelier, $23,583.41 for Helen Cangelier and $33,709.15 for Angelo Cangelier. The amounts represented taxes which the Government figured the three owed on their profits from slot machine and numbers operations.
The settlement with the three Cangeliers was reached by the appellate division of the Treasury Department but the amount was not revealed. A spokesman for the division said any information on the settlement would have to be released by A. J. Dudley, director of the Pittsburgh Office of the Internal Revenue Dept.
However, Mr. Dudley's office, while admitting that a settlement had been reached, declared the amount of the settlement was not available. A spokesman for the department said that where "arbitrary" assessments are made, such as those against the Cangeliers, they are purposely made ceiling high to protect the Government's Interest. "Then they are adjusted or abated on the basis of records and books which are produced," the spokesman added.
The Cangeliers, who have records of numbers and lottery arrests dating back into the 1930s, won the reputation for "charmed lives" in their dealings with the law. After being sentenced to eight months in prison in 1942, Sam was paroled after serving only two months of his term. His brother, Lucho, who drew a six-month sentence, also went free despite the strong opposition of the District Attorney's office.

FRANCES CANCELLIERE LAQUATRA - DEC. 11, 1914 - FEB. 18, 2007 CO-FOUNDER OF ROSA VILLA EATERY
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - February 22, 2007
Author: LINDA WILSON FUOCO, PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE
Frances Cancelliere Laquatra loved people and loved food. She combined those interests by working for virtually all of her adult life at the Rosa Villa restaurant and bar on the North Shore, which her family owned and operated from 1932 to 2004. Mrs. Laquatra, of Brighton Heights, died of natural causes Sunday at Vincentian-Regency Nursing Home in McCandless. She was 92. Mrs. Laquatra started the restaurant with her brothers, the late John and Angelo Cancelliere .
"They had Italian food and just about everything else, too," said her granddaughter, Fran Laquatra of Brighton Heights. "She made soup at her house and took it to the restaurant," which was located at the corner of General Robinson and Sandusky streets. She was still taking soup to the restaurant well into her late 80s." Mrs. Laquatra always enjoyed chatting with customers who still saw her, shortly before the restaurant closed in 2004, chopping vegetables and slicing lunch meat, Ms. Laquatra said.
Rosa Villa had many "regular" customers, including Steelers owner Art Rooney and "Mean" Joe Greene, when he played for the Steelers. Actors Michael Keaton and Dennis Hopper stopped in when they were in town. Mrs. Laquatra grew up in Manchester and she and her late husband, Michael, raised their children there. She later moved to the North Hills and then to Brighton Heights.
She didn't stop cooking when she was off-duty from the family restaurant. "We always had big Sunday dinners at her house," her granddaughter said. "There would be soup and spaghetti and meatballs and everything else in between."
Survivors include a son, Joseph, of Shaler; two daughters, Rose Marie Lovell of Brighton Heights and Nancy Jean McConnell of Shaler; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Make-A-Wish or Vincentian-Regency Nursing Home.

John Cancilliere, who is in seventies and has known LaRocca from birth, interviewed at Pittsburgh residence, 3611 Shadeland Ave. He admitted he stayed at 5616 Arthur St., Hollywood, Fla., from January, last to end of April last, but denied that LaRocca utilized his home as a headquarters or visited him with any frequency.
