To my understanding, some of the guys from Ontario, we transplants from the Luppino organization in Hamiliton-Ontario. That family was associated with Stefano Magaddino. That's partly why he started to make a stink about Bonanno.

Another reference that points to Joe Bonanno inducting members without approval, this one from Ray Patriarca:

Image

"...making a lot of guys that he was told no to" in Canada and the West Coast fits the other sources.

What makes the comment weird is he refers to Bonanno making "families" in those locations, but we know those were just crews. It kind of fits with Giancana/Accardo's concerns in 1958 that Bonanno was trying to install a Family in Arizona under his son Bill, plus the 1960s attempt to take over LA. Maybe one of the Commission's worries was that Bonanno was planning to build those areas up and eventually give them their own organizations subordinate to him as a sort of capo dei capi ("boss of the world").

Either way another boss who was aware of Bonanno making members without approval.

Here's what Luigi Ronsisvalle said about Bonanno importing guys:

Image

Ronsisvalle said he arrived in early 1968, and met Pino right away, so that right in the midst of the violence.

Seems to be that Pino and the others would be a transfer, so it they wouldn't technically be inducting them, but it's interesting that, if true, some of those guys stayed with the New York family, despite originally being with Bonanno. I'd guess that Pietro Licata might have helped with that.

Wouldn't be the first time the Zips switched sides.

Definitely seems they just recognized him as a member, despite not being made the "right way". If he was made pre split, maybe that gave him a little more legitimacy than if he was made by a rogue faction, but I'm just speculating . Although, given it had been ten years since the DeFilippos left New York, and even longer when Patty was supposedly made, I wonder if anyone would have made that distinction?

I also wonder if anyone point out that Patty wasn't made the "right way", maybe after Galante died, what would happen? If the Commission got involved, would they have him be re-made like those DeCavalcante guys?

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadian induction included an NY guy (i.e. DeFilippo) given Patty DeFilippo was said to be going to Canada on his father's behalf on the Magaddino tapes and they seem confused in that transcript over whether he was made in Montreal vs. NY. Maybe Sciacca meant he was with the NY element but Magaddino had info he was made in Montreal.

If it was known he was inducted "illegally", raises the question of whether anyone questioned it when he returned to NYC. If Galante recognized him, maybe the rest of the family fell in line and he was grandfathered in.

Thanks for sharing. The Morello thing stuck out to me too. The same informant said he met Bonanno twenty years prior, so probably some neighborhood guy who was confused on the history.

DeFilippo possibly being "snuck in" in New York opens up the possibility that it wasn't just Montreal and Arizona Bonanno inducted guys when the books were closed before the split. However, it's also not clear from this informant when these inductions took place. This was in 1968, so the informant could be referring to the inductions that were done during the split.

1968 informant who said JB inducted members without Commission approval. Suggests some of them were only half-recognized, but who?

The Piddu Morello thing should be ignored -- not sure Bonventre was even in the US at the time and we know the Maranzano faction killed Morello in 1930.

When I first saw this topic, I thought it had to do with all the people Johnny Joe Junior made🤣🤣🤣

You're the one who posted this so the credit is yours:

- Indicates a 1977 source was aware of someone close to Vito DeFilippo being inducted during the Bonanno conflict, his son being the obvious candidate.

Reposting this from the 1960s Bonanno thread:
Here is what DeCavalcante said:

"You see, a message was sent by Ange Bruno, Joe (Zerilli) -- and I went with these guys. And we spoke to Johnny Burns and his son (Bill Bonanno). He said the father made guys in Canada -- he made them in Arizona. There was a few beefs that the Commission wants to talk to him about. But Ange Bruno and Zerilli were supposed to only ask."

Here is what Magaddino and Paul Sciacca said:

Image

Image
- The allegation is 7 were made in Ontario and 2 in Montreal after the books closed and that the Montreal decina was supposed to have only 10 members (a true "decina") and Magaddino would take issue if there's even 11. A later source said the Bonanno Family had unidentified members in Ontario by the early 1970s which would add to these Canadian induction rumors.

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing. Need to find the time to get through those Magaddino files

There was an informant in the 70s who said Patty was made during the split, but I think it was prior. Magaddino talked about it with Paul Sciacca, but shows up in a different translation in those Magaddino files I posted.

It reads like they're still talking about DeFilippo. If so, Sciacca says that he was made in New York which is interesting.

I posted this in the 60s chart thread, but thought it deserved its on thread in case it leads to discussion.

Looks like the Bonanno faction was inducting members during the Bonanno split:

Image

This one is from December, 1969.

The attitude isn't surprising. Given that both Joseph and Bill claim that the Commission that forced them out was "illegitimate", I totally buy that they would induct guys to breed loyalty. Plus, if Bonanno was inducting guys in Arizona and Montreal without Commission approval before the split, it follows that they would do the same during.

No indication of how many new guys they supposedly made, but since the Bonannos lost out, anyone who didn't move to Arizona with them probably faded into obscurity.

I haven't found any other indication, but Hank Perrone is described as a "button" here:
Image

Given how close he was to Bill, and that even Rosalie wrote about him, seems likely to me he was made when he was killed. Although he doesn't show up on deceased members lists, I'm not sure. Could be that maybe the FBI didn't count him as he was a member of a "rogue faction", or maybe just slipped through the cracks.
