A big part of Mancuso's rise has involved members like Nicky Santora, Vinny Badalamenti, John Sciremammano, Tommy DiFiore, and John Palazzolo. For whatever reason Mancuso inspired hardcore loyalty from some of these guys from different crews in addition to his own Bronx faction.
Sal Montagna must have played a big role helping Mancuso maintain power 2006-2009. Cicale felt Mancuso and Montagna were scheming together against him (Cicale) when Mancuso was acting underboss and Montagna was acting captain of the DeFilippo crew. Santora told a CW in early 2007 that Mancuso (who was by then in prison) was still in power. From what John Pennisi recently said, Anthony Rabito may have been on Mancuso's side as well, so that acting admin of Montagna / Santora / Rabito must have been crucial for securing Mancuso's position (official or not) circa 2006-2009. I'd guess Joe Bosco continued in similar fashion but it seems at some point the Sicilians went over to Cammarano's side.
Remember too the Bonanno Bronx faction has been one of the most violent NYC mafia groups since 1999. They killed Sciascia and Seccafico, Basciano's guys committed other murders, one of the DeFilippo crew members went to war in Montreal, and there have been these various beatings. While violence in the mob isn't what it used to be, the old DeFilippo crew has shown a willingness to commit blatant violence even in the modern era.
