What's interesting about Canarsie now though, like I had mentioned the gangs above, is that it's really ground zero for fraud in NYC and pretty much in America as a whole. More fraudsters per capita than anywhere. Fraud is a way of life there...you got kids driving BMs and Audis at 16 pulling down $20K bank fraud scores on a regular basis. It's kind of sick how ingrained in the culture it is. It's no surprise that prosperity gospel Bishop who had the jewlery and rolls royce who just got robbed during service ran his church in Canarsie...he was arrested for fraud about 15 years ago himself.
You could even call it a Caribbean Bensonhurst . Tons of good, full families who own and take care of their homes and a small % of shithead lazy/greedy kids getting into trouble. If it's a shithole because the italians moved out to LI and black people moved in, that's not right. Plus it's a huge area, covers a lot of ground, im sure you have blocks that are much nicer than others. If it matters, South Shore still gets a good amount of white students too.
I generally agree , the east side can be rough but the rest is pretty nice, higher middle income worker class.
From visiting the area, my impression was that it really does vary a lot by block in Canarsie. The area by the Rockaway Pkwy stop I thought was particularly unappealing, though still not on the level of the really bad parts of BK. Farther in towards the water matches newera’s description, apart from the immediate vicinity of the PJs there (which is true of the PJs anywhere in NYC; see Throggs Neck). There are local knuckleheads from the neighborhood, of course, but Canarsie is a pretty small neighborhood that also has the misfortune of being located adjacent to some much rougher areas, IMO, so I wonder how much stupid shit there is local vs spillover (or how much the local idiots are influenced by proximity to the larger knucklehead concentrations in ENY, Brownsville, E Flatbush).
