I realised I didn’t quite think my fractions through here properly. Given that not only was Joe’s paternal grandmother, Ida Culhane, Irish, but his paternal grandfather’s mother, surname Slater, was born in Ireland, Joe could actually be 1/2 Italian, 3/8 Irish, 1/8 English. That said, generally, the name Slater would be English not Irish, which could lead to all kinds of speculation about British rule in Ireland at that time, etc. I am probably getting too bogged down in the weeds here
. Half-Italian, half-Irish/English, with an English surname. That will do.
