I don't think Merlino's title, or perception of it, or recognition of it, is necessarily relevant to the meeting in NY. At this point, I'd imagine it's just some guys meeting to see if there is mutual advantage to be had.

I agree, I think it's probably a mix up on DS's end

"Merlino has been pals with acting Lucchese Caporegime Joe Perna for years. Pictures of Perna and Merlino have appeared on various internet posts for years until both Perna and Merlino went to prison briefly."

This conflicts with what Pennisi has said. Which is that its Mike Perna's kid Big Joe Perna is acting capo which would make sense cause Little Joe(who Merlino is pals with) had to be separated from his Dad and brother John and brought into the Brooklyn crew in the past. I think its a screw up by Schratweiser who prob doesn't know that their are two made guys names Joe Perna and they are cousins.

Schratweiser wrote an article on Merlino and the Philly Mob yesterday. Mentions going to the Lucchese's Christmas party.

Also mentions a "made guys only" bash of some sort. Talks a little about newcomers that have been recently spotted. Also one of these "newcomers" was at the made guys only bash. Does that mean someone new was possibly made? Would be odd if they had associates at a made guys only bash. Not sure who termed it that or where they got it from though?

I doubt they had a sign saying...Made guys bash on the second floor. birthday party on the first...LOL

Anyway here is the article.

What’s Ahead For Joey Merlino and The Philly Mob In 2022?

As the New Year unfolds, there’s still some storm clouds hanging over the Philly Mob. 2022 might be another tough year for the local wise guys.

Trials, prison sentences, more indictments, even a reorganization at the top, could be in the wings for the Philly LCN.

Federal prosecutors have been cutting plea deals left and right with some of the lower-level defendants in the November 2020 racketeering indictment, but some of the top figures still look like they could be headed for trial in 2022.

As the year begins some of the top defendants, including Domenic Grande, former Underboss Steven Mazzone and Mob soldiers Sonny Mazzone and Joseph Servidio are staring down the prospect of two trials tentatively scheduled for the Spring and September.

Grande, Servidio and John Michael Payne are first up for trial if no plea arrangements are reached. Right now, the Mazzones and two other defendants are docketed for trial in the Fall.

Each of those trials will be highlighted with the playing of several years-worth of secretly recorded FBI tapes, including the recording of a Philly Mob induction ceremony. Mazzone, Grande and other unindicted Mobsters were caught on audio tapes at an October 2015 making ceremony. The tapes, according to legal experts, could be very damaging to the defendants and later on to more so far unindicted wiseguys.

Grande faces the added burden of defending himself against a handful of damaging tapes regarding drug dealing, including heroin, fentanyl, pills and cocaine. He is potentially looking at the most severe prison sentence if convicted. And while he does have one of the region’s top defense attorneys, Brian McMonagle, on his team, as my Mobtalksitdown colleague George Anastasia likes to say “you can’t cross examine a tape.”

Servidio faces a big burden as well. He is already serving a 15-year sentence for drug dealing in New Jersey and has also been caught on tapes. If convicted, he could face another long sentence with the possibility that a new sentence could run consecutive to the 62-yr old mobster’s current prison stint which isn’t set to end until 2030. Do the math here, that’s a problem.

One-time Mob Underboss Steven Mazzone also has two top-flight defense attorneys in John Meringolo and Lou Busico, but he too could be severely hurt by secret tapes from the infamous 2015 induction ceremony. He’s looking at a sentence ranging from six years on up. He also has a prior racketeering conspiracy conviction from his 2001 trial that could hurt him if he were to lose this case at trial in September.

His brother Salvatore “Sonny” Mazzone, a top soldier in the Philly organization, faces a much lesser sentence in the case.

That brings us to the current Philly Mob reorganization already underway. If Grande, Mazzone and his brother go down in this case. that would leave a vacuum at the top of the South Philly Mob under reputed acting Street Boss Michael “Lance” Lancelotti and the reputed Boss himself, Joey Merlino.

Grande and the Mazzones have been on house arrest for over a year already and their presence, mob insiders say, is already being missed on the streets and in the inner sanctum of the Philly Mob.

For example, none of those three top wiseguys were in attendance at two recent Mob Christmas parties. One held at the crew’s local clubhouse near 9th and Christian that sources say featured top Mobsters like Lancelotti, former longtime Mob Boss Joseph Ligambi, top ranking Mob Captain John Ciancaglini and lowkey Mob Captain George Borgesi, as well as several top soldiers in the organization.

Merlino was not in attendance at the clubhouse gathering, but sources say a couple of unnamed newcomers were, leaving some to believe Merlino could be ready to bring some new talent on board to deal with the short and possibly long-term absence of Grande and the Mazzones.

Merlino, sources say, did fly into Philadelphia from Boca Raton, Florida the following day to attend a “made guys only” bash that night. At least one unnamed newcomer made an appearance at that gathering.

Former Lucchese wiseguy and government cooperator John Pennisi wrote in one of his first columns of the year at Sitdown News that Merlino has, according to Pennisi’s mob sources, been meeting with a high ranking member of the Lucchese Crime Family.

He also quoted sources as saying Merlino and other Philly wiseguys attended the Lucchese Crime Family’s Christmas party in New Jersey. This raises some questions about a possible renewal of alliances with the Luccheses.

Merlino has been pals with acting Lucchese Caporegime Joe Perna for years. Pictures of Perna and Merlino have appeared on various internet posts for years until both Perna and Merlino went to prison briefly.

These developments, mob insiders say, have Merlino making some chess like moves of late. Those insiders also say, there’s no doubt who’s running the show in Philly headed into 2022.

Merlino, who just got off supervised release in a NYC Mob case, continues to deny any involvement in the local Mob and any criminal wrongdoing,

To date, no charges or even a mention of Merlino in the current case against the Philly Mob.

So far, none of the attorneys for the defendants still awaiting trial have commented on the case. All of the discovery in the case is under a protective order and can only be viewed by the defendants and their lawyers.

He is broke. Everything was seized. Bank accounts homes cars Even stuff in his wifes name do to money laundering laws and bogus mortgage app. According to his father Leonetti stole all the money and went into WWP with whatever Nicky Sr had. The N Georgia ave building was not worth allot of money. I am not sure if the feds took it ..but it was only worth a couple hundred grand at best. And he had other family to split it with. Was a long time ago. The FL home was seized as was the boat. Whatever rackets Nicky Sr personally had were taken when he went away and lost control of the family. Jr's adult son is from his first marriage when he was up north. She divorced him when he went away. Whatever gambling rackets Jr had were taken by the NJ lucchese crew and they didn't like him. They pal around with his arch enemy Joey Merlino. Jr was looking to relocate to FL after getting bumped down to soldier just prior to his arrest. He was on the outs with Andy up north and half Jersey Lucchese crew would soon be hanging with Merlino in the summer at Margate. Actually genius of Merlino to befriend Joey Perna Good way to keep tabs on a guy you don't like. I don't think he had allot. Feds these days sieze everything and charge the spouses with money laundering. allot of guys come out of jail broke and have to start over.
According to Scott Burnstein on Gunner Lindbloom youtube show, the feds allowed Phill to return to Georgia Avenue and take the money in Nicky Wall which was 2 to 3 million dollars in to the witness protection programme.

Scarfo Jr was dead broke before he went away after the feds took everything. I believe his wife had to move in with her parents when the feds took the house. If he survives the sentence he will be an old man and dead broke when he gets out. His life is pretty much over at this point. I don't think Merlino or anyone else even thinks about him anymore. Hes pretty much an non issue at this point.

But just hanging around criminals all the time doesnt make him a criminal? No it doesnt. But what do you think?

Vic is hundreds of miles away, over 80 years old, all his calls taped and his letters read. He’s doesn’t give a shit about Merlino.

Why does everybody think Im from London? Honestly. Ruffles the feathers.
Lets play a game. Im not English and live in North America..... but, Im not North American.
Thats all you get ;)

And thanks for telling us that Vic doesnt give a F about Merlino. Good call. Becuase he clearly doesnt care about LCN business anymore, you know, ordering the takedown of Madonna/Crea and installing DeSantis.

Talk less and listen more. It'll help your image.
Vic does care about LCN business as he is the official boss.He didn’t take down Crea though he did take down Madonna for DeSantis. That move makes sense but Crea was going to continue as Underboss regardless of who’s the Acting Boss.If I remember correctly, DeSantis even told Crea that Crea would be the new boss if he beat his case in 2017

Pure speculation on my part but, now that Nicky Sr. is dead and Jr. doing 30 years, I wouldn't be surprised if recognizing Merlino isn't an issue anymore.
Exactly. I agree 100%.
Do you think Wiseguy cares you agree?

Maybe with Scarfo dead he now recognizes Merlino
Maybe he only holds so much sway in prison for life and in his 80s and DeSantis and Dellorusso make those decision and run the show on the streets.
Vic Amuso is the only reason as to why DeSantis is the Acting Boss.Amuso approved DeSantis becoming the Acting Boss.Maybe Vic’s stance on the Joey Merlino situation has changed but if DeSantis was really running the show on the streets, he would have took Frank Lastorino of the shelf but DeSantis knows that he cannot do that because Amuso put him on the shelf.Mikey DeSantis is close to Lastorino and John Pennisi said that he believes that if Vic Amuso passes away then the Lucchese’s will pull Frank Lastorino of the shelf and place him into the administration.
I believe its all out of respect for Amuso. Lets be real. If DeSantis wanted to grab the family without Vics approval he could. But its about respect for him and LCN. I think Amuso is made aware of things DeSantis and Dellorusso want him to know and Amuso is not made aware of things they don't want him to know if you get my drift. And Merlino is one of them. Amuso also doesn't trust the NJ faction never has because they were always closer to the Bronx faction(Amuso's rivals). The fact that Merlino is close to Joe Perna is another reason Amuso doesn't like or trust Merlino. Its not just the Scarfo thing. Amuso made Scarfo a capo in NJ not just because of Nicky sr but because he has a bias against the Taccettas and Pernas because they defied him in the early 90s which is unheard of. When Nicky Jr made the papers about taking over philly and the fact that Perna's were pulling in way more money then Nicky Jr kinda put Amuso in a position where he couldn't deny Madonna's move to make Ralph Capo at that time. I also think that's why Zappola is Capo of NJ. Give Brooklyn more of an inside look into whats going in NJ. Its more then just the infighting between the pernas and taccettas etc Gotta remember Brooklyn crew members were actively hunting to kill in the entire nj faction in the early 90s for breaking off rather then pay 50%.
Amuso still carries a lot of respect.Amuso inducted DeSantis into the Lucchese Family, personally by administering the oath.Vic still has total control over the family. If he wanted to, he could demote DeSantis. He could have also said no to the move that DeSantis was making in 2017 but of course he didn’t because I’m pretty much sure that Amuso wants guys who are loyal to him in the Acting Boss position.
