So it's typically ten years with the other families?
I wouldn't take that as gospel. After the Donnie Brasco incident, the Bonnanos implemented a rule that an associate had to be on record for at least eight years before being proposed, and I've heard that it takes at least ten years to get made with the Genovese—but I don't know if that is a formal rule, or if it is just the result of them being very selective.
Understood. So it takes a couple years to be made. Even from there, it sounds like they ONLY replace members and add 2 members per year. So the Luccheses could never really have 200 buttons like the Gambinos?
The length of time that it takes to get made varies from family to family, individual to individual, and time period to time period. One guy might get made after five or six years of being on record, while it might take another guy in the same family twenty years. Barney Bellomo got made at a very young age after only a few years of being around the Genovese family, and, if I remember correctly, John Pennisi got made with the Luccheses almost out of the blue after a couple of years.
And yes, each family has a limit on the number of members they're allowed to induct. It used to be that they could only replace members who died of natural causes. If a member was murdered, they couldn't be replaced. Over time, that policy of not allowing murdered members to be replaced effectively lowered the caps on the families, so they eventually created the rule that allows each family to bring in two members at Christmas.
