Gene is a fucking loose cannon but I legit don’t understand how Rubeo can get busted for running his mouth on their podcast, and like 6-7 months go by before the Feds decide they have a problem with Gene doing the podcast. If it’s that big of a deal, how does he not get violated right away?
And just for kicks I re-listened to that Rubeo interview, and for like 97% of the interview he is absolutely emphatic about how the life is no good and how he’ll never commit crime again. I mean he almost sounded like he was gonna cry. But for just a *little* bit, he bragged about making the prosecution’s job harder than it should’ve been. He talked about fucking up their case. Erasing cell phones and shit. And they tried to drill him for it.
Different judge. Different prosecutors. Plus, I think the only reason it was brought up with Borello was because of the ex-girlfriend thing. So, if you look at it objectively, the prosecutors had to reveal that information to the judge lest he find out through a news story in which case they would be in trouble just as Rubeo's prosecutors were after the Daily News (or Post) story came out and the judge saw it - even though they were only admonished. No real consequences.
That’s a fair explanation. And while I personally think Borello is a scumbag that deserves very little leniency, I *do* think the gov’t has a tendency to make deals with guys that they know are no good, knowing they can nail them on a technicality down the road. The exact same thing is happening right this second with the Flores twins in Chicago (El Chapo’s biggest American clients). They put the proverbial nail in El Chapo’s coffin by turning themselves in and testifying. Because of their cooperation, despite selling over a billion dollars worth of coke, they only got 14 years. Now that they just got out, the gov’t is trying to nail them for hiding assets.
