Remmer was with the Genovese. He kicked up tribute to the SF and SJ families for operating on their territory, and that was all. He answered to Westside and probably Chicago considering their grip on California rackets.

Remmer was probably the top syndicate guy in N California and Reno/Tahoe. He was one of the silent partners in the Cal Neva with Sinatra and Giancana. He was a Luciano/Costello associate and pretty much ran gambling in the bay area. He had control of the town of Emeryville, which was probably the most mobbed up town in the country in the 40s and 50s. Remmer had just about all of the elected officials there in his pocket. One of his cardrooms, the Oaks Club, was still open as of the covid shut downs

Saw someone online mention San Fran had some Vegas action, does anyone know if that’s true?

Yeah thanks for this, I was very tempted to buy it despite the negative reviews.

Kindve a shame all three of the California families have been largely brushed under the rug when it comes to documentaries, books etc
I wish I could be less cynical and tell you to go ahead and give it a try, but in this case I'll emphatically reiterate to not. The book is awful. lol. Try to find it on the archive.org or your local library before buying it, but I'm telling you, if you have to check out the physical book you're going to regret wasting the gas to go and pick it up after trying to read it.

Do searches on San Francisco and San Jose on this website. There are great threads on these families that go much further in depth than this book.

Rat wrote: Sat Feb 13, 2021 9:52 pm Thanks for the replies, although I'm a bit skeptical on the book a lot of the reviews are mixed stating it's mainly just general mafia info with only a bit of SF sprinkled in. Plus I'm pretty left-wing myself but the author labels herself as "ANTIFA" in her own Twitter bio which makes me suspect about her mafia writing.

I saw somewhere online that the FBI believed the SFPD was protecting Lanza, does anyone know about these allegations?
The book is horrible. I made the mistake of buying it new. It was $30. I'm from Sacramento and interested in the mafia so of course I just have to buy a book about the nearest mafia family to where I'm from. I mean I would have rather spent that $30 on a good dinner, because I didn't even get one single evening's worth of joy from this book.

First off it's only like a hundred and something pages. It says 200 pages on Amazon but like half of that is references, etc. The book seems to end just as it begins. I'm pretty sure it was just a money making scheme by the author.

Regarding the info, It really is just a cookie cutter rehash of mob history that inserts already well known facts about SF into the basic Bill Kurtis history of the mob from prohibition through Appalachian. The author tries to add a regional bias sense of humor, takes shots at Raider fans, it's just really stupid. I've even tried rereading it while bored a couple of times, thinking it has to have some redeemable value. It doesn't.

You'll get far more info on the SF and SJ families right at this website, from posters like B., Antiliar, and several others. Very extensive backgrounds on the families and its members that this book barely scratches the surface on.

Could not agree more. I bought it new also when it came out. Beyond disappointed.

Yeah it is not as if there really were communists and commie sympathizers embedded like ticks and flees in the mass media, the universities, the Justice Department and the State Department back then. We saw what a lovely job they did with the country when it all blew up in the 1960s and what an even lovelier job they are doing to it now.

A lot of parallels between how many people are actually "Antifa" and how many people were american communists in the 50's. Both are being used for the same purpose.

The author, I read somewhere, is actually a guy. You know, one of those who thinks gender is simply a matter of how one self-identifies. Also a criminal defense attorney. Anyway, that would certainly explain his Antifa leanings.

We have some very knowledgeable researchers on San Francisco...Antillar is one of them. In case you’re not aware of this book, if you’re interested, give it a shot.
